Summary

The Anesthesia Technologist is a member of staff who provides technical support services to the clinical staff and to the department. The incumbent is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of anesthesia machines.

Responsibilities

• Identify electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines, including system setup procedures, leak detection, and calibration techniques for each anesthesia monitoring function.
• Identify and resolve problems with commonly employed anesthesia equipment such as physiologic monitors (ECG, NIBP, SaO2, EtCO2, peripheral nerve stimulators, invasive hemodynamic monitors), airway pressure, electronic humidifiers, fluid warmers, patient heating/cooling systems, infusion pumps, Doppler’s, data recorders and any other equipment required for common anesthesia applications.
• Set up and apply specialized anesthesia equipment and resolve associated problems.
• Assemble systems for invasive monitoring according to protocols.
• Assemble, test and operate specialized equipment for blood salvage and re-infusion during surgery.
• Perform corrective action necessary to correct problems in anesthesia machines and recognize issues requiring manufacturer intervention.
• Determine availability and appropriateness of replacement equipment; complete installation of replacements when required.
• Inspect, test and install replacement medical and compressed gas cylinders on anesthesia machines.
• Identify malfunctioning equipment for repair by biomedical services, generate requisitions, deliver equipment, and monitor until returned to service.
• Access the monthly biomedical services preventative maintenance listing, schedule all listed equipment, deliver, collect and install serviced items.
• Inventory and maintain an appropriate supply of medical compressed gas cylinders for emergency use.
• Maintain department files and records for equipment repairs, maintenance and service.
• Maintain an inventory of specialized non‑stock supplies used in selected anesthesia applications.
• Inspect, assemble and test equipment and monitors used by clinical anesthesia staff during patient transport, specialized anesthesia settings (e.g., radiology) or any other appropriate setting.
• Assist clinical staff in transporting anesthesia machines, monitors and supplies from primary anesthesia sites.
• Inspect, test and take corrective action for the operation of medical gas scavenging systems associated with anesthesia gas machines.
• Complete documentation for activities during blood salvage and re‑infusion.
• Instruct others on indications for use and results obtained with blood salvage and re‑infusion techniques.
• Takes on‑call assignments for the operation of blood recovery systems.
• Receive supplies or parts, appropriately label items as necessary and verify correctness of the product received.
• Observe and follow appropriate infection control procedures for the assembly of sterile systems used in task performance.
• Generate records and documentation. Perform other related duties as required.
• Unit specific duties: Exchange drug trays both AM and PM for all Operating Rooms and Labor & Delivery; transport trays to Pharmacy; maintain all drug charges for Labor & Delivery, Main Operating Rooms, and Endoscopy; order supplies and equipment for Labor & Delivery and Main Operating Rooms; order supplies and equipment for Holding Area and Recovery Room when requested; demonstrate service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise); perform all other job duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements – Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices.
