Job summary

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is seeking an Anesthesia Technician II to provide perioperative technical and clinical support to the anesthesia team for all procedures. The role requires teamwork, flexibility for 24/7 coverage, and adherence to safety protocols in the OR.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider.
  • Cell Saver – Blood Salvage setup and operation during surgery.
  • Blood draws from patient lines (ACT, ABGs, venous samples, type & cross).
  • Immediate emergency response with clinical and technical support.
  • Assist with patient transfer to and from the OR bed.
  • Assist with positioning and monitoring equipment.
  • Prepare and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain inventory levels of anesthesia supplies and equipment.
  • Provide staff education and orient new team members.
  • Position is 24/7 coverage with rotating shifts.

Salary range: $22.28 – $32.31 hourly. Placement within the salary range depends on relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

The Anesthesia Technician II provides perioperative technical and clinical support to the members of the anesthesia team for all anesthesia procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Provides patient care under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider.
  • Cell Saver – Blood Salvage (sets up and runs the machine during surgery).
  • Blood draws from patient lines (e.g., ACT, ABGs, venous samples, type & cross).
  • Immediate emergency response – provides clinical and technical support.
  • Assists with patient transfer to and from the OR bed.
  • Removes jewelry and collaborates with circulating nurses regarding OR protocol.
  • Assists with patient positioning, especially arm placement and security.
  • Places monitoring equipment (e.g., ECG leads, BP cuff, BIS sensor, pulse oximeter probe).
  • Assists with intubation, including self‑check and device maintenance as directed by the anesthesiologist.
  • Prepares patient for access line placement and invasive monitoring (sterile field preparation, arterial lines, central venous lines, peripheral vascular lines, cardiac catheters, femoral lines, etc.).
  • Assists the licensed anesthesia provider in confirming patient identification.
  • Verifies blood products per hospital policy (Blood Administration 5.91) with the transfusion professional.
  • Does not transfuse any fluids, including blood products.
  • Assembles IV fluids for infusion under direction of the licensed anesthesia provider.
  • Does not transfuse or monitor infused fluids.
  • Provides patient security during placement of spinal & epidural catheters, intubation, extubation, and recovery from anesthesia.
  • Patient transport.
  • Prepares, disinfects, and troubleshoots all anesthesia‑related equipment and supplies for procedures (including anesthesia machines, point‑of‑care testing, monitors, drug infusion pumps, blood infusion equipment, fluid warming, TEE echo probe, intubation equipment, gas cylinders, breathing circuits).
  • Assists with movement of equipment and supplies to support room turnover and readiness.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and equipment related to anesthesia care.
  • Provides clinical and technical support to anesthesia staff at other departments (ICUs, IR, MRI, GI, CT, EP, ED).
  • Serves as a resource for anesthesia staff in other departments.
  • Attends in‑services for continuing education and maintenance of competency.
  • Orients new staff to the Anesthesia Technician role.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Position is 24/7 coverage; all positions rotate to meet department and hospital needs.
Qualifications
Required
  • 1‑2 years of technical healthcare experience

  • Possess excellent time‑management skills and the ability to meet deadlines consistently
  • Display a positive attitude and willingness to collaborate with team members to achieve goals
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and move at least 35 lbs.
  • Basic Life Support certified through the American Heart Association (mandatory upon hire); renewal provided by NMH
Preferred
  • Certified Anesthesia Technician
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree
  • Motivation to advance career in the medical field
