Qualifications

  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting GC/MS, GC/FID, GC/ECD, and/or HPLC systems.

Job Summary

We are currently seeking an Analytical Chemist. This position is a full-time opportunity located in Norwell, MA.

Battelle’s Analytical Chemistry Services (ACS) Laboratory is a nationally recognized environmental chemistry laboratory providing both specialized and routine analytical services to government and industry clients. In this role, you will apply analytical chemistry expertise to support environmental testing programs through method-based analysis, data evaluation, technical problem-solving, and operational optimization. Core responsibilities include performing and interpreting chemical analyses, evaluating data quality and quality control results, supporting method development, and contributing to technical documentation.

The successful candidate will bring advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry, chromatography, and mass spectrometry to the analysis of environmental samples and complex client projects. This role requires initiative, strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, quality personnel, and laboratory staff.

Responsibilities

As an Analytical Chemist, the selected individual will support environmental testing programs and contribute to the growth and modernization of the ACS Laboratory. Responsibilities may include:

  • Lead method development initiatives that broaden laboratory capabilities, expand service offerings, and support strategic growth objectives.
  • Develop, validate, optimize, and troubleshoot analytical methods for complex environmental matrices, target analytes, and project-specific requirements.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of environmental samples using GC/MS, GC/FID, GC/ECD, HPLC, and related analytical instrumentation.
  • Apply scientific judgment and technical problem-solving skills to investigate complex analytical issues.
  • Contribute to the laboratory quality assurance program through proficiency testing, quality metric review, corrective action support, and continuous improvement of analytical practices.
  • Prepare and review analytical calculations, data packages, technical reports, SOPs, validation documentation, and other project or regulatory deliverables.
  • Establish labor-hour budgets that support project profitability while accounting for method complexity, optimization needs, and efficient laboratory execution.
  • Develop and implement process improvements that increase operational efficiency, strengthen laboratory performance, and drive improved financial outcomes.
  • Provide technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and training support to laboratory staff as appropriate.
  • Support projects defined by the Division Manager that advance business line growth and laboratory modernization priorities.
  • Maintain technical proficiency with laboratory software, data acquisition platforms, LIMS, and instrument systems used to generate, process, and manage analytical data.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 5 years of experience; Master’s degree with 2 years of experience; PhD; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of analytical chemistry principles, instrumentation, and laboratory best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting GC/MS, GC/FID, GC/ECD, and/or HPLC systems.
  • Experience performing environmental analyses including one or more of the following: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), PAHs, pesticides, PCBs, and related environmental contaminants.
  • Experience with analytical method development, method validation, and quality assurance/quality control programs.
  • Ability to independently analyze data, evaluate results, and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Proficiency using laboratory software platforms, including data acquisition and data processing systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare technical reports and communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in environmental analytical chemistry laboratories.
  • Advanced experience with GC/MS, GC/FID, and/or GC/ECD instrumentation and environmental testing methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Agilent software platforms including MassHunter, ChemStation, and EnviroQuant.
  • Experience with EPA analytical methods and data packages supporting environmental programs.
  • Experience with analytical method validation, quality systems, ISO 17025, TNI requirements, CAPA investigations, and root cause analysis.
  • Experience with LIMS systems and laboratory workflow management.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or providing technical leadership to laboratory analysts.
  • Demonstrated success implementing laboratory automation, process improvements, data integration tools, dashboards, or workflow optimization solutions.
  • Experience applying AI-enabled tools, Python, Microsoft Power Platform, data integration platforms, or similar technologies to automate workflows, improve data quality, and increase laboratory efficiency.
Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $87,600 – $124,800 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
