Job summary

Shelby City’s Parks and Recreation department seeks a Recreation Program Supervisor to oversee the carousel, train, and amusement facilities, coordinating events and staff while ensuring safety and regulatory readiness.

Qualifications

• Associates/Technical degree with coursework in business administration, marketing, or tourism; moderate related experience.
• CPR and First Aid certifications required upon hire.
• Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.
• Must participate in specialized training to operate the carousel and train.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and participates in all activities at the carousel, train, and amusement facilities.
• Assists with recruitment and selection of staff; assigns, directs, trains, inspects work; coaches, counsels, and evaluates staff; develops staff schedules.
• Plans and promotes holiday and special events; receives reservation information; prepares contracts; schedules operators to cover events.
• Meets with the public; makes presentations promoting amusement rides.
• Ensures daily safety of mechanical devices and readiness for annual State inspections.
• Accounts for revenue from daily operations and submits to appropriate staff for processing.
• Performs routine maintenance to ensure cleanliness of facilities.
• Assist and make recommendations to maintenance staff in routine maintenance and repair of the carousel, train, amusement facilities and machinery, lighting, and restroom facilities.
• Prepares and maintains information on City website and social media.
• Attends meetings and training as necessary.
• Educates the public regarding proper use and safety measures of the ride.
• Oversees volunteer workers and outside contractors for special projects and events; assists with maintaining resources for solving mechanical or artistic issues.
• Maintains and prepares a variety of records and reports concerning carousel, train, and amusement facilities. Maintains safety and operational materials for operators.

Job description

Performs difficult technical work supervising the operation and maintenance of the carrousel, train, and amusement facilities, planning events, maintaining records and preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Recreation Program Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over Amusement Equipment Operators.

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in business administration, marketing, or tourism, and moderate experience in the operation, maintenance of amusement equipment and facilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must participate in specialized training to operate the carrousel and train. Possession of CPR and First Aid certifications upon hire. Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

Ability to acquire knowledge of the practices, methods, and policies used in carrousel, train, and amusement facility operations and maintenance; ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups and organizations the benefits of amusement assets to the community; basic knowledge in the principals, methods, materials, and equipment used in the repair of the carrousel, train, and amusement facilities; mechanical aptitude; ability to understand and follow written departmental policies and guidelines; ability to plan and participate in routine maintenance; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to prepare and maintain detailed financial records; ability to operate and supervise carrousel, train, and amusement facilities and to account for revenues; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, associates, interested groups, and the general public.
