Industrial Refrigeration / Ammonia Technician IV
Summary
The Industrial Refrigeration / Ammonia Technician IV is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC and related utility equipment. This position plays a critical role in equipment reliability, production support, food safety, employee safety, and Process Safety Management (PSM) compliance.

- Department Goals:
- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Maintain and service two-stage industrial ammonia refrigeration systems and related utility equipment.
- Conduct daily refrigeration system inspections and log operating conditions.
- Monitor compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, pressure vessels, control valves, heat exchangers, and alarm systems.
- Respond to refrigeration alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations using approved procedures.
- Identify and repair ammonia leaks using approved safety procedures.
- Perform oil changes, filter replacements, vibration checks, system adjustments, and other required maintenance.
- Perform established preventive maintenance and identify new PM activities as needed.
- Perform predictive/condition-based maintenance activities including vibration analysis, lubrication, inspections, and condition monitoring.
- Analyze and solve electrical and mechanical problems related to ammonia and utility systems.
- Complete work orders, maintenance records, refrigeration logs, and required documentation accurately and timely in the CMMS.
- Conduct daily chemical testing of condenser cooling water, document test results, and make required adjustments.
- Maintain accurate records required by the PSM program.
- Participate in PSM audits, mechanical integrity inspections, and emergency response planning.
- Support facility utilities including boilers, air compressors, water systems, HVAC systems, and process cooling equipment.
- Coordinate with Production and Sanitation to minimize equipment downtime.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Safety, Quality, and Regulatory Compliance:
- Comply with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM).
- Comply with EPA Risk Management Program (RMP).
- Follow USDA, GMP, food safety, quality, and company safety policies and procedures.
- Support the plant PSM system and Mechanical Integrity Program.
- Maintain safe and efficient operation of refrigeration systems.
- Use required PPE and follow established procedures around ammonia, electrical, mechanical, chemical, confined-space, and elevated-work hazards.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of maintenance and repair experience on ammonia refrigeration systems and 2 years of HVAC experience.
- Experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration; food manufacturing, meat processing, cold storage, poultry, dairy, or beverage experience preferred.
- Possess IIAR Industrial Refrigeration I or equivalent qualification.
- Valid driver's license.
- Working knowledge of two-stage industrial ammonia systems.
- Understanding of advanced air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating principles.
- Working knowledge of boiler systems and air/water treatment systems.
- Ability to read P&IDs, electrical schematics, equipment manuals, schematics, and work plans in English.
Preferred Certifications and Technical Skills
- RETA CARO, CIRO, and CRT certifications are preferred.
- Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain CARO and CIRO certifications if provided the opportunity.
- Operator training compliant with IIAR and OSHA PSM requirements.
- PSM Mechanical Integrity experience and Emergency Response Team training.
- PLC troubleshooting, Allen Bradley controls, and VFD troubleshooting.
- Industrial electrical troubleshooting up to 480V.
- Mechanical seal replacement and pump rebuilding.
- Welding and fabrication.
- Willingness to continue education in HVAC and industrial refrigeration.

Work Schedule and Working Conditions
- Ability to work after hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins when circumstances required.
- Work in cold and wet environments, routinely 30–45°F.
- Work inside and outside with exposure to inclement weather; temperatures may range from -20°F to 130°F.
- Work in confined spaces and at elevated locations using ladders or mechanical lifts.
- Routine exposure to humidity, noise, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and production-area hazards.
- Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods, including respiratory protection when necessary.
- Ability to lift and carry objects as required: the source documents specify occasional 25–50 pounds, while the newer posting specifies lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk on concrete floors for extended periods, up to 10 hours.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, crawl, squat, kneel, reach, work with hands overhead, and perform fine dexterity tasks.
