Job Summary
Under moderate supervision a Refrigeration Technician 3 is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and examining refrigeration systems, working specifically with ammonia refrigeration. This role requires performing preventative maintenance on refrigeration systems, responding to any system interruptions, and being on call to conduct emergency repairs. The position requires working and communicating with a diverse variety of individuals, including fellow technicians, supervisors, and clients, and assisting with upkeep of critical documents.
Essential Position Functions
- Supports both the PSM and Refrigeration team to maintain all PSM, Refrigeration, and Safety documentation retention (SOPs, LOTO’s, and P&IDs).
- Maintains PMs of refrigeration systems.
- Confer with operators, observe, test, and evaluate operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose root cause of malfunction.
- Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
- Perform daily chemical testing and log all test results, making adjustments required to maintain refrigeration and utility systems within established limits.
- Use and maintain fitted full‑face respirator periodically.
- Assist with inventory control.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Technical degree preferred.
- Must have at least 7 years + experience.
- Must have Technician II and PSM/RMP certification.
- Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience helpful.
- Required to be able to pass and maintain annual medical and pulmonary fit tests for respirator use.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- English/Spanish bilingual is a plus.
- Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems and Process Safety Management (PSM) is required.
- Use of technology such as computers, mobile devices, etc. preferred.
- Experience in refrigerated food manufacturing plants.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, and moving around refrigeration systems.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- The environment may be wet or dry and temperatures may range from -20°F to 110°F.
- Repetitive pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending and lifting objects in excess of 80 lbs.
- Requires walking or standing for long periods, ascending and descending stairs and ladders.
- Production demands may require overtime and/or evening or weekend scheduling.
- Schedules vary from 10‑12 hour shift work required.
