Job summary

Memspa is seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to support a 1:1 student in a Midland Public Schools setting. This full-time role offers 40 hours per week with a starting wage of $20–$32 per hour, and a salary range of $49,449 – $107,023 per year.

The interpreter will accompany a deaf student throughout the day, translate instruction, and assist the classroom teacher in implementing the IEP. Certification in Michigan and EIPA 4.0+ are required.

Qualifications

  • Appropriate certification in the State of Michigan.
  • EIPA 4.0 or higher is preferred.
  • Any other qualifying certification.

Responsibilities

  • Accompanies deaf student throughout the day to classes and interprets spoken language.
  • Interprets instruction and follows student’s IEP with classroom teacher.
  • Tutors student individually and reinforces concepts and skills.
  • Assists teacher in monitoring student’s behavior.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior and supports a positive classroom atmosphere.
  • Interprets at parent conferences or meetings as necessary.
  • Interprets/translates activities in classroom and educational settings.

Requirements
  • Appropriate certification in the State of Michigan
  • A highly qualified candidate will have an EIPA of 4.0 or higher
  • Any other qualifying certification
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accompanies deaf student throughout the day to classes and interprets spoken language.
  • Works with classroom teacher to interpret instruction and follow student’s IEP.
  • Tutors student individually as necessary in a variety of learning activities; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Reinforces and reviews concepts and skills.
  • Assists teacher in monitoring student’s behavior.
  • Acts as role model to demonstrate appropriate behavior to students; assists teacher in maintaining a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Will interpret at parent conferences or other meetings as necessary.
  • Interprets/translates into sign language all appropriate activities in the classroom and other educational settings. Includes, but not limited to discussions, films, special projects, assemblies, field trips, and athletic activities.
