Job summary

Memorial Hermann Health System seeks a Pharmacy Technician II to support pharmacists in the outpatient spaces and hospital operations. The role involves technical and clerical duties, including facilitating unit-dose dispensing, compounding, and IV admixtures as needed.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of medical terminology, at least 3 years in a pharmacy, and be capable of multi-tasking with attention to safety and accuracy across shifts, including weekends where required.

Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have Pharmacy Tech registration or Pharmacist intern registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
  • ACPE IV Certification with completion of 40-hour course in I.V. admixture preferred.
  • Pharmacy Sterile Product certification if compounds sterile products.
  • Three (3) years of pharmacy experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Select prescribed medications according to dosage and strength indicated on patient file.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas.
  • Stock and monitor drug inventory levels.
  • Inspect and maintain emergency medication trays.
  • Package and label unit dose forms and maintain records.
  • Respond to oral medication requests from nursing and other departments.
  • Post and code patient pharmaceutical charges and review billing records.
  • Prepare IV medications and sterile products per protocol.
  • Document quality improvement activities for the IV room.
  • Ensure medications comply with safety checks and regulatory standards.
  • Attend to customers, gather medication history when applicable.

Job Summary

Position is responsible for assisting the Pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care by performing technical and clerical duties associated with the operation of the Pharmacy.

This is a floating position and the ideal candidate will have reliable personal transportation to seamlessly step in and cover both scheduled time off and short-notice call-outs to include weekends, as needed at our various outpatient retail pharmacies.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current Pharmacy Tech registration or Pharmacist intern registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy required. ACPE I.V Certification with completion of 40-hour course in I.V. admixture preferred.

  • Pharmacy Sterile Product certification through accredited program is required if incumbent compounds sterile products.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Three (3) years of pharmacy experience required, preferably in a hospital pharmacy; employeeshired on or prior to January 28th, 2022 are grandfathered in with 2 years of experience.

  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology.

Pharmacy Technician II requires proficiency and routine activity in a minimum of three (3) skills from List I or a minimum of one (1)skill from List IIthat’sbeingperformed as the primary role of the job

List I:
  • Distribution (Unit Dose/PYXIS)

  • Inventory

  • Pre-Packaging

  • Satellite operation (i.e. OR, Pediatrics, etc.)

List II:
  • Compounding

  • TPN

  • Billing

  • IV admixture

Principal Accountabilities
  • Selects prescribed medications according to dosage and strength indicated on patient medication file or cart-fill list. Delivers medications to the patient care areas.

  • Stocks and monitors drug inventory levels, ensuring adequate and up-to-date supplies.

  • Inspects and maintains emergency medication trays.

  • Packages and labels unit dose oral liquids/tablets, and maintains pre-pack records.

  • Responds to oral requests for medications from nursing personnel and other departments.

  • Posts and codes patient pharmaceutical charges and credits into automated system, and returns credited medication to inventory. Reviews patient billing records for accuracy.

  • Prepares intravenous antimicrobials, large volume parenterals, adult and neonatal TPN solutions, epidurals and intravenous antineoplastics.

  • Documents Quality Improvement activities for the I.V. Room, e.g. hood cleaning, refrigeration temperature log, aseptic technique, etc.

  • Follows processes to ensure all medications are compliant to technology safety checks.

  • Prepares sterile products in an accurate and aseptic manner when appropriate.

  • Attends to customers as a liaison and gathers a medication history if applicable.

  • Properly manage pharmaceutical waste.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
