TITLE: Alternative Program Special Education Teacher

LOCATION: Urbana Middle School, Urbana, Illinois

SUPERVISOR: Building Administrator, Executive Director for Student Services, Assistant Director of Student Services, or Special Education Administrator

SUPERVISES: Teaching Assistants

Job Summary

The Special Education Teacher provides high‑quality instruction based on frequent assessment and data analysis. Services are delivered in a structured, supportive environment that promotes student growth. The role includes consulting with general education teachers and related service personnel, serving as case managers, and training and monitoring teaching assistants.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with staff, parents, teaching assistants, and students to ensure an appropriate comprehensive education for each student on the caseload.
  • Coordinate the IEP process: writing IEPs, facilitating meetings, monitoring services, participating in eligibility determinations, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assess student performance through formal and informal measures; use data for instructional decisions and IEP goal planning.
  • Design clear, organized, relevant instruction aligned to the general education curriculum, core standards, and student needs.
  • Create a learning environment where students engage in meaningful experiences; staff functions as a team; decisions are student‑centered and individualized.
  • Provide direct instruction as outlined in the IEP.
  • Complete progress monitoring of academic and functional goals.
  • Consult and collaborate with staff to implement accommodations and modifications needed to access the curriculum.
  • Train, monitor, and supervise Teaching Assistants.
  • Maintain positive communication with parents through conferences, reports, and other means; document contacts.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities within or outside the district.
  • Support students requiring physical assistance per the IEP, including transport, lifting, self‑care, hygiene, and medical needs.
  • Participate in special activities such as field trips and vocational/aquatic center events.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: Illinois Educator License, endorsement LBS1

Experience: Two years of school‑based experience preferred

Other Requirements
  • Willingness to become certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, maintain certification, and implement physical restraints safely and in accordance with district, state, and federal laws.

Terms of Employment
  • Salary and benefit information available on the Human Resources webpage. Additional compensation (stipends, differentials, extra duty pay, etc.) may be earned during the regular school year and summer.
  • This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
  • This is an exempt position.
Evaluation

To be completed by the building administrator or district special education administrator.
