Retail Pharmacist
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Retail Pharmacy Manager, the Retail Pharmacist is responsible for all areas of retail pharmaceutical services, including the procurement, distribution, storage, and administration of drugs by appropriate staff. The Retail Pharmacist ensures that pharmacy services comply with all State and Federal regulations.
Position Qualifications
- Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of California.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. from a college of Pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
- Current BLS Certification.
- Meets the requirements set forth by current federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and regulations governing retail pharmaceutical services.
- Maintains the required continuing education hours annually to assure continued competence in the practice of pharmacy.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with others at all levels within the organization.
- Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, written, and oral communication skills.

Specific Competencies
- Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications and pharmaceuticals for patient care.
- Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers for accuracy and determines necessary formulas and ingredients.
- Directs pharmacy staff engaged in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
- Answers customer questions regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of medications, offering counseling when appropriate.
- Engages patients and clients concerning customer service programs provided by the pharmacy.
- Integrates patients and clients into pharmacy program offerings actively.
- Maintains established procedures for quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs.
- Enters data including patient names, medications, and costs to maintain pharmacy files, charge systems, and inventory.
- Instructs interns and pharmacy personnel while ensuring compliance with state/federal pharmacist to technician ratios.
- Addresses third-party Rx systems awareness and resolves rejection issues promptly.
- Reports prescription errors immediately and adheres to policies regarding medication incidents.
- Maintains vigilance regarding loss prevention controls and procedures.
- Develops and maintains productive relationships with healthcare professionals to enhance customer service.
- Synthesizes and analyzes complex information, complementing data with experience and intuition.
- Pursues ongoing training and development opportunities while keeping current with changes in laws and pharmacy-related programs.
- Handles difficult customer situations promptly, solicits feedback to improve service, meets commitments, and maintains confidentiality.
- Maximizes sales and manages expenses in the retail pharmacy environment.
- Ensures adherence to current pharmacy policies.
