Summary

The Medication Technician is responsible for the safe administration of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician and under the direction of the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director. The role includes maintaining accurate medication records, reporting changes in resident status related to medications, and ensuring all medication processes comply with nursing standards, property policies, and state regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate medication services with residents, the pharmacy, and physicians; inform the pharmacy of new residents’ medication needs and verify dosage with the physician.
  • Order additional medications as directed, track all medication orders for changes or refills, and report any changes to the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director.
  • Assist the Resident Services Director in maintaining accurate resident records, completing Medication Administration Record (MAR) duplicate sheets and performing monthly audits of residents’ charts.
  • Maintain an inventory of department supplies, notify leadership when levels reach a threshold, and place supply orders with supervisor approval.
  • Act as the main point of contact for physicians, family members, and vendors in the absence of the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director.
  • Assist with department scheduling, covering call‑offs, vacations, and minimizing overtime.
  • Update the Caregiver Monthly Assignment Journal, Medication Technician Med List, and 24 Hour Communication Log as required.
  • Assist residents with daily medications, treatments, and resident care within the scope of practice and Title 22 regulations.
  • Observe and verify that prescribed medication is ingested or applied as directed; document any refusal or non‑administration and notify supervisor or Executive Director.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential resident medication and care records according to established procedures and state law.
  • Keep medicine carts and medication rooms orderly, clean, and properly stocked and locked.
  • Assist medication aides and caregivers in the performance of their job and assume caregiver activities when needed.
  • Participate in and complete narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift; report any discrepancies immediately.
  • Prepare medication for distribution to residents following the company’s Medication Policy.
  • Carry radio or pager as directed to ensure prompt response to resident issues.
  • Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms used by residents, pharmacists, and physicians.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection control, including hand‑washing, blood‑borne pathogens procedures, and universal precautions.
  • Maintain required licenses and certifications as required by state law and report occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per property policies.
  • Participate in community marketing efforts through friendly interaction during tours and telephone contact with the public, as directed by a supervisor.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, residents, and guests following safety standards.
  • Encourage teamwork through cooperative interactions with co‑workers and other departments.
  • Support a positive and professional image through actions and dress.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successfully completed the company’s Medication Administration Course with a passing grade and all state‑required medication training.
  • At least one year of experience successfully administering medications; experience with elderly clients preferred.
  • Proficiency with standard office equipment, telephone, and personal computer.
  • Demonstrated awareness and concern for resident safety, ability to make independent decisions, and ability to work without supervision.
  • Knowledge of facility fire plan, disaster plan, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and interact tactfully with residents, families, staff, and the general public.
  • English reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Good physical health verified by a health screening, including a chest x‑ray or intradermal test result not more than six months prior or seven days after employment; mobile and able to meet physical job requirements.
  • Commitment to resident satisfaction, positive attitude, sincere compassion toward older adults, and genuine concern for the physical and emotional needs of residents and their families.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
