Job summary

City of Prescott seeks an Airport Operations Technician to perform daily safety and security inspections and field maintenance at Prescott Regional Airport. This full-time temporary role supports regulatory compliance and safe operation of the airport.

The position requires a high school diploma and at least one year in airfield operations or maintenance, a valid Arizona driver’s license, and the ability to pass TSA/security checks. Overtime eligibility applies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; aviation knowledge encouraged.
  • One year of airfield operations and/or maintenance experience or equivalent training.
  • Must pass TSA background, pre-employment drug test, fingerprint check, and driver record check.
  • Arizona driver's license; ability to obtain AAAE ACE designation within one year; Arizona Class B CDL is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily airport safety and security inspections of facilities, perimeter, grounds, and properties per FAR Part 139 and related regulations.
  • Conduct daily, nightly, and special airport self-inspections per FAA and ACM.
  • Inspect airfield surfaces, lighting, signage, and navigational aids per FAA regulations.
  • Perform general field maintenance (mowing, weed removal, sweeping) and issue work orders.
  • Monitor on-airport construction for safety and conformance with plans.
  • Respond to aircraft incidents as directed and implement Airport Emergency Plan.

Position Summary

Performs daily Airport safety and security inspections and general field maintenance activities to support the safe and efficient operation of the Prescott Regional Airport.

Essential Duties
  • Performs daily Airport safety and security inspections of Airport facilities, perimeter, grounds, and properties to ensure regulatory compliance with FAR Part 139, Airport Certification Manual, FAR Part 77, TSR 1542, Airport Security Program, and other federal, state, and local regulations or policies; issues notices to airmen (NOTAMs), maintains logs; and records in accordance with regulatory requirements; writes incident/accident reports; and interacts with tenants and customers.
  • Performs daily, nightly and special Airport self-inspections in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations and the Airport Certification Manual (ACM).
  • Inspects airfield surfaces, lighting, signage, and navigational aids in accordance with FAA Regulations.
  • Performs general field maintenance to include mowing, weed removal, and sweeping in addition to general custodial services; issues work orders for non-conforming conditions.
  • Monitors on-airport construction projects for safety and conformance with approved construction safety and phasing plans.
  • Responds to all aircraft incidents and accidents on the airfield in accordance with the Airport Emergency Plan and to surrounding jurisdictions as requested and implements the Airport Emergency Plan.
  • Maintains a safe operating environment for emergency personnel through coordination with Air Traffic Control.
  • Initiates FAA, NTSB, or other agency investigations as directed by Department notification procedures.
  • Handles general Airport Security in accordance with the Airport Security Plan (ASP); performs Airport security checks in accordance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations.
  • Responds to Airport security incidents such as perimeter security breaches, unattended bags, etc. in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
  • Responds and monitors alerts.
  • Performs snow and ice removal operations to the runways, taxiways, aircraft parking ramps, Airport public roads, sidewalks, and parking areas in accordance with the Airport Snow and Ice Control Plan.
  • Issues /cancel Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) along with other airfield safety and operational notification requirements.
  • Issues Field Condition Reports (FICON).
  • Logs, tracks, and responds to wildlife sightings and reports received; prepares regular reports and documentation of wildlife incidents; and regularly inspects Airport perimeter to identify wildlife habitat locations, access points, food sources, etc. and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Operates heavy machinery; mows with tractor flail mower; operates street sweeper; and maintains perimeter roads with dump truck and back hoes.
  • Conducts regular inspections and monitoring of, but not limited to, aviation fuel service operations and storm water pollution prevention plan (SWPPP).
  • Conducts airfield driver's training.
  • Performs administrative work; reviews, responds, and generates emails; generates reports; and handles other Airport documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. Basic knowledge or interest in aviation environment; one (1) year of airfield operations and/or maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements

Possess a valid Arizona driver's license; pass a TSA-mandated 10-year security background investigation, pre-employment drug test, fingerprint background check, and driver record check. Completion of the Airport Operations training program, as outlined in the City of Prescott Airport Operations New Employee Orientation/Training Guide, within three (3) months of hire. Possess an AAAE ACE-Operations and/or AAAE ACE Security Designation or have the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. Desire an Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

  • Knowledge of 14 CFR Part 139 and 77 regulations, limitations, practices, and procedures for inspections, operations, maintenance, and construction on and around a airport property.

Physical Demands And Working Conditions
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Safely and effectively and safely perform required duties; safely operate required equipment and City vehicle as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 100 pounds occasionally with assistance, 50 pounds regularly without assistance, and push, pull, twist reach and bend.
  • Clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person and over the telephone and aviation radios.
  • Duties require working shifts including mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and/or being available to respond to a variety of airfield problems and situations.
  • Work is performed part of the time working in an environment where errors on this job can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for self or others.
