Position Information

This recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position.

The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a department promotional certification to fill an Airport Maintenance Worker III position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

As an Airport Maintenance Worker III at the Sonoma County Airport, you will complete a variety of skilled maintenance and repair projects on airport grounds, facilities, and infrastructure. You will provide day-to-day direction to Maintenance Worker I/II and extra-help staff, and work closely with the Senior Airport Operations Specialist to coordinate maintenance activities with airport operational requirements. As a working lead, you will be responsible for:

• Inspecting and maintaining runways, taxiways, ramps, service roads, fencing, signs, pavement markings, drainage systems, and other airport property
• Operating, maintaining, and repairing tractors, mowers, loaders, sweepers, utility vehicles, commercial vehicles, and other light/heavy maintenance equipment
• Performing vegetation management, including mowing, weed control, brush removal, tree/limb work, and maintaining required clear areas around airport facilities
• Performing general building and facility maintenance involving carpentry, plumbing, painting, minor electrical work, concrete, fencing, doors, gates, and related repairs.
• Identifying maintenance deficiencies, safety hazards, foreign object debris (FOD), damaged infrastructure, and other conditions that could affect safe airport operations; correcting or reporting them as appropriate.
• Performing work safely within or adjacent to active aircraft operating areas and coordinate activities that could affect Airport operations
• Responding to urgent maintenance needs, weather-related events, emergencies, and operational issues as assigned
• Completing work orders, inspection records, equipment records, and other basic documentation associated with assigned work

The ideal candidate for this position will be a self-motivated, safety-conscious individual with strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting ability. In addition, they will possess many of the following:

• Maintenance experience in an airport, public works, parks, facilities, industrial, transportation, military, or similarly complex operational environment
• Broad hands-on experience in several maintenance trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, concrete, fencing, pavement repair, landscaping/vegetation management, and minor electrical or mechanical work
• Experience safely operating and maintaining tractors, mowers, loaders, sweepers, commercial vehicles, utility vehicles, and other maintenance equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational safety practices and demonstrated ability to identify hazards before beginning work
• Experience performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting problems, and determining practical repair solutions
• Experience working independently and prioritizing multiple maintenance needs
• Airport or airfield maintenance experience is highly desirable, including familiarity with FOD control, situational awareness, access control, and safe work around aircraft
• Experience leading, training, or providing work direction to less-experienced employees is highly desirable
• Basic computer skills sufficient to enter work orders, communicate by email, complete records, and access County or Airport systems
• The ability to use radios and communicate clearly and concisely in an operational environment

Note: A valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A CDL) is required for this position.

Duties may involve prolonged standing and walking; bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting/carrying materials and equipment; and other physically demanding work. Work may occur on uneven terrain, paved airfield surfaces, ladders/rooftops, drainage areas, and other airport facilities. You will be required to wear appropriate work clothing, high-visibility apparel, personal protective equipment, and Airport identification/security credentials. You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, or altered schedules based on operational needs, and may be subject to callback or emergency response for storms, flooding, facility failures, safety hazards, or other urgent Airport maintenance needs. Work schedules and priorities may change quickly in response to aircraft operations, weather, emergencies, or safety considerations.

Working Conditions: Duties require sitting, standing, walking on level, sloped, and slippery surfaces at various heights, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, crouching, and grasping. Conditions also require the need to lift, carry, and push equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds. Incumbents are required to be available for after-hours emergency response; work in close proximity to moving traffic; and work in all weather conditions, including rain, cold, heat, fumes, dust, and other air contaminants that may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to climb ladders, operate personnel lifts, and work in confined spaces; handle noise-producing tools and equipment; and drive a motorized vehicle. Under the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing if they operate vehicles and/or equipment that require DOT testing.

Any combination of education and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include:

Experience and Education: Three years of experience in public works or road construction and maintenance work, at least one year of which included training in the safe and correct operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Special Qualification: Incumbents assigned to operate the crane must possess a valid Crane Operator Certification pursuant to the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5006.1.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position. The position advertised on this announcement requires possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: methods, materials, occupational hazards and safety procedures and tools used in public works, road construction and maintenance; safe and correct operation and preventive maintenance of heavy and light equipment, machines and power tools.
