Job summary

The City of Manchester, NH is seeking an Airport Building Maintenance & Structures Technician to join its facilities team. The role focuses on preventive maintenance, repair of structural and mechanical systems, and ensuring safe, operable airport buildings.

The successful candidate will work under the Airport Building Maintenance & Structure Superintendent, perform tasks indoors and outdoors in all weather, and coordinate with tenants, contractors and colleagues while adhering to FAA safety

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • 3–5 years of building maintenance or skilled-trades experience.
  • Equivalent combination of experience and training acceptable.
  • CDL-B license required or to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • On-call availability as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on structural and mechanical systems of airport facilities.
  • Install and repair electrical, electronic equipment and HVAC systems.
  • Assist with snow removal and de-icing operations.
  • Coordinate with airport staff, tenants, contractors and the public.
  • Respond to alarms and support emergency response operations.
  • Guide and train new employees; report progress to supervisors.

PAY GRADE - $29.09 - $41.47/hr- plus a comprehensive benefits package

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs structural and mechanical preventative maintenance and repair on Airport buildings; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to keep assigned structural and mechanical systems of Airport buildings in a safe and operable condition. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Airport Building Maintenance & Structure Superintendent, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Airport employees, Airport tenants, contractors, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed both indoors and outside, often in extreme weather conditions.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:
  • Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on all structural and mechanical systems within airport facilities; (building walls, installing drywall, paint, install flooring, trim and suspended ceilings, conduct demolition, concrete work, ceramic tiling as needed, etc.;
  • Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on small equipment, irrigation systems, jetway bridges, commute-a-walks and related;
  • Troubleshoots and replaces defective electrical and electronic equipment;
  • Installs electric, computer and telephone cable;
  • Troubleshoots, performs preventative maintenance and performs repairs on Building HVAC systems;
  • Performs snow removal and de-icing operations during snow storms;
  • Enforces Airport FAA safety and security regulations;
  • Serves as a member of the Airport emergency response team;
  • Responds to alarms; assists Airport Fire Department with locating devices and resetting;
  • Responds to medical calls; assists with closing area off until cleansing and inspection is complete;
  • Assists with crowd control/security during incident;
  • Works with master electrician on electrical service changes, generator tie-ins and installation of new electrical outlets and lighting fixtures, etc.;
  • Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
  • Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
  • Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
  • Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
  • Performs additional duties as required by the classification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Substantial knowledge of carpentry, painting, electrical, heating and air conditioning principles and techniques;
  • Substantial knowledge of construction principles and techniques;
  • Substantial knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials of the painting, plumbing, electrical and HVAC trades;
  • Ability to learn and apply Airport security and safety rules and regulations;
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time‑sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Graduation from High School or possession of GED; and
  • Three to five years of experience in building maintenance and/or any of the skilled trades; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) - (Individuals may be hired without the CDL. However, those individuals must attain the CDL-B within the first six months of date of hire);
  • On call status.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to inspect civic construction work under conditions encountered on construction sites;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate and work around construction equipment;
  • Sufficient strength and endurance with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to lift and carry, through a full range of motion, up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds continuously;
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to visit construction sites throughout the Airport and to climb crawl tight places and otherwise move through and around all construction and maintenance sites.
