Job summary

Concepts Beyond is seeking a former Air Traffic Control instructor with direct FAA Academy experience in Oklahoma City to help design next-generation ATC training tools and bring innovative training capabilities into the Academy environment.

You will collaborate with our design and engineering teams to translate training pain points into actionable requirements for simulations, phraseology tools, and curriculum, ensuring alignment with FAA JO 7110.65 and ICAO standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years' experience as an ATC instructor at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City (OJT only does not count).
• Minimum 4 years' operational ATC experience in at least one facility type: Tower, TRACON, or ARTCC/Center.
• Working understanding of NAS automation systems (STARS, ERAM, TFMS).
• Ability to clearly communicate ATC concepts to non-controllers in writing.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary subject-matter authority on ATC training curriculum, classroom and lab processes, and evaluation methods at the FAA Academy and other training facilities.
• Partner with instructional design and software teams to translate training pain points into requirements for skills trainers and simulation-based tools.
• Represent Concepts Beyond credibly to FAA Academy leadership and curriculum stakeholders in Oklahoma City.
• Ensure training content aligns to FAA JO 7110.65 and ICAO Doc 4444 standards and learning objectives.
• Communicate complex ATC concepts clearly to non-controller audiences and contribute to technical documents.

Concepts Beyond is seeking a former Air Traffic Control instructor with direct experience at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City to help design next-generation ATC training tools and bring innovative training capabilities into the Academy environment.

Essential Functions

• Serve as the primary subject-matter authority on ATC training curriculum, classroom and lab processes, and evaluation methods at the FAA Academy and other training facilities — including where current approaches fall short and why.
• Partner with our instructional design and software teams to translate real training pain points into requirements for skills trainers, phraseology tools, and simulation-based games, reviewing and validating their realism and alignment to FAA/ICAO standards.
• Represent Concepts Beyond credibly to FAA Academy leadership, staff instructors, and curriculum stakeholders in Oklahoma City, drawing on your own standing and experience in that environment.
• Ensure all training content aligns to FAA (JO 7110.65) and ICAO (Doc 4444 PANS-ATM) standards and curriculum-based learning objectives.
• Communicate complex ATC concepts clearly to non-controller audiences (developers, designers, and government stakeholders) and contribute to technical documents and reports.
• Provide operational perspective on emerging concepts such as Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO), FF-ICE, and UAS/Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) as they affect training and controller workload.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years' experience as an ATC instructor at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City (Air Traffic Basics, Initial Qualification, or Specialized courses). OJT-only instruction does not satisfy requirement.
• Minimum 4 years' operational ATC experience in at least one facility type: Tower (CIC/OSS), TRACON, or ARTCC/Center.
• Working understanding of NAS automation systems (STARS, ERAM, TFMS, etc.).
• Demonstrated ability to communicate ATC operational and training concepts clearly to non-controller audiences, including in writing.
• Willingness to critically evaluate current training methods and advocate for change within the Academy environment, even where that means challenging established practice.

Desired Skills

• Prior involvement in curriculum development, ISD projects, or training course revision at the Academy.
• Familiarity with ATC simulation platforms (UFA, Adacel, ATCoach, ATSpeak, or comparable).
• International ATC experience: ICAO-compliant operations, ANSP engagement, or ATC procedure development for non-FAA environments.
• Familiarity with Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO) and FF-ICE implications for controller workload and procedure design.
• Experience contributing to White Papers, Concepts of Operations, design documents, or test plans.
