Job summary

Palm Beach State College is seeking an Air Conditioning Mechanic I to maintain and repair HVAC and refrigeration equipment across campus. The role involves monitoring energy management systems, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring safe operation of all related systems.

The candidate should have a high school diploma or GED, four years of HVAC/refrigeration experience, and an EPA Universal Refrigeration certificate, plus a Florida driver's license.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provides prompt and courteous service to service requests and follows up on work orders.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots refrigeration and HVAC systems.
  • Monitors and maintains energy management and related controls.
  • Performs regular maintenance and parts replacement.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, NFPA).
  • Prepares required reports and updates stakeholders.

About this role

Under general supervision, responsible for maintaining and repairing the HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Monitors and maintains the Energy Management System to maintain the comfort level of the buildings. This role may work some weekends, during college closings, and is required to report in times of equipment failure or outage.

What a day of an Air Conditioning Mechanic I looks like
  • Provides prompt and courteous service to service requests; Answer, screen, research, inform, advise, record, process and follow-up all customer requests efficiently and expeditiously as received by telephone and work orders
  • Provides progress updates of work being performed
  • Analyzes mechanical equipment database for life expectancy planning.
  • Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots the refrigeration, air conditioning/heating and ventilation systems and related equipment.
  • Services and maintains refrigeration equipment, heating, and air conditioning systems by determining malfunction and replacing or repairing defective parts or elements.
  • Monitors the chilled water treatment and energy management systems.
  • Ensures the proper and efficient operation of all related equipment.
  • Coordinates operation and maintenance of automated energy management controls.
  • Develops energy utilization program, collects and analyzes data to establish long range goals.
  • Provides technical assistance to department or campus or other functions.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structure, and pipe and electric system for department campus, or college.
  • Changes filter in air handlers; perform plumbing and electrical repairs on heating and air conditioning or other mechanical system, as required.
  • Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Monitors current inventory of supplies and equipment, notifies appropriate parties if inventory runs low.
  • Prepares required reports for various internal and external requests.
  • Responsible for compliance with appropriate State, Federal, and local safety regulations to include but not limited to OSHA, EPA, and NFPA to ensure a safe learning and working environment.
  • Follows established safety practices.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Four years of experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC or refrigeration equipment

Knowledge of:

  • HVAC and refrigeration service and installation techniques
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heating and air conditioning equipment
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications

Skilled in:

  • Analyzing relevant information to solve problems
  • Interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail while maintaining effective time and task management

Ability to:

  • Interact in a positive manner with diverse populations and varying education levels of students, faculty, staff, and the public

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Regular physical attendance required
  • EPA Universal Refrigeration certificate
Preferred, but not must:

  • Six years of related work experience
  • Commercial industrial air conditioning systems experience
