Job description

This position serves as a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Equipment Mechanic at the VA Healthcare System, Bay Pines, Florida and reports to the HVAC Shop Supervisor, Engineering Service. The primary duty of this position is to provide maintenance and repair support for this HVAC system, in addition to the hospital itself, support services are provided to outpatient clinics, as well as Veterans Centers.

Major Duties
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: Possess the ability to read and understand blue prints, drawings and control diagrams. Use basic knowledge and skills of the crafts to perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, systematic troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of various sizes and types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and system components. Make rough sketches or prints of newly installed or modified equipment or systems to be delivered to the Air Conditioning Work leader for updating mechanical blueprints. Construct dust barriers and / or blocks off areas for the safety and protection of patients, staff, visitors and equipment. Ensure that job site is clean of all debris and equipment upon the completion of work. Work Schedule: Full-time; Weekday, Day 8-10 hour shifts Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD04542A Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Incumbent frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to (50 pounds). Occasionally, lifts and carry items that weigh over (50 pounds) with help. Working Conditions: Incumbent will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools and clothing, etc. to protect himself/herself, other staff, visitors and patients. Assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basement, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads and walkways. Incumbent may be exposed to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions, live steam, and hot pipes. Incumbent must always be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. He/she must observe all local and National Safety Codes. Work assignments may require a thorough knowledge of hazardous material handling & exposure to include asbestos containing material (ACM) and related activities. Incumbent is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes. There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks and incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.) Incumbent must be willing to work odd hours, if required, to include but not limited to weekend and shift work, although normal tour of duty is day shift, Monday through Friday.
