Job summary

Lufkin ISD seeks an Aide - Deaf Education Interpreter (Not-Certified) to support Deaf and hard of hearing students across district settings. The position reports to the Deaf Education Supervisor and requires basic sign language skills with ongoing BEI certification efforts.

Responsibilities include interpreting in classroom and school activities, tutoring students, maintaining records, and ensuring confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic knowledge of sign language, working towards BEI certification.
  • Ability to work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with interpretation in classrooms, co-curricular activities, meetings, and staff development.
  • Tutor Deaf and Hard of Hearing students under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Adapt to each student's communication needs and keep teacher informed of needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional communication with all parties.
  • Supervise students during lunch, bus, and playground.
  • Support behavior management and intervene in crisis situations when necessary.
  • Maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Participate in staff development and faculty meetings.
  • Provide welcoming, service-oriented environment for students, parents, and staff.

Reports to: Deaf Education Supervisor


Qualifications:
Education/Certification:

Must be 18 years of age
High school diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Basic knowledge of sign language, working towards BEI certification.
Ability to work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students

Experience:
Some experience working with children


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support 1. Assist with interpretation in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
2. Tutor Deaf and Hard of Hearing students under the direction of the classroom teacher.
3. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's communication needs.
4. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.


Student Management 5. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
6. Help manage student behavior including intervening in crisis situations when necessary.


Other 7. Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
8. Maintain confidentiality.
9. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
10. Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.


Customer Care Skills 11. Provide professional communication with students, parents, community members, staff, and other professionals at all times.
12. Use proper phone etiquette at all times, speaking slowly and clearly. Take reliable messages and route them to the appropriate staff.
13. Ensure superior customer care skills are used via eye contact, facial expressions, voice inflections, body language, and an attitude of "going the extra mile" for others.
14. Ensure all requests for information are dealt with in an appropriate timeframe.
15. Create and maintain a welcoming, service-oriented environment toward all internal and external customers.
