Job Title: AI Product Engineer (Full Stack)
Location: Hybrid, Dallas/Las Colinas office
Department: Information Technology, Data & AI
Work Authorization Requirement: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. Shermco does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Job Overview
We are hiring an AI Product Engineer to build the applications and AI agents that put Shermco's data and AI to work. Many of our most valuable opportunities need purpose-built applications for field technicians, estimators, project managers, and office teams, and over time more of them will have AI built in. You will design, build, deploy, and support those solutions end to end.
This is a full stack engineering role with real depth in AI. Most of your work will be custom web and mobile-friendly applications, and a growing share will be production AI agents that take actions in our business systems. You will build the solutions that need custom code or complex agents, including those handed off by the Forward Deployed AI Engineer, and make them production-grade: reliable, secure, tested, and monitored. You will own each solution across its life, not only the initial build.
The role sits on the Data & AI team and reports to the Sr. Director, Data & AI. You will work closely with the Forward Deployed AI Engineer, the Data & AI Governance Engineer, and data engineering. You will also partner with the IT Products, Infrastructure, and Security teams on architecture, hosting, and application security standards, so your solutions fit cleanly into Shermco's broader IT environment.
Key Responsibilities
Application Development
- Design and build web and mobile-friendly applications, including front ends, APIs, and data access layers, for internal Shermco users.
- Build user experiences for AI features and agents, including chat, review and approval, and task-focused interfaces.
- Integrate applications with Microsoft Fabric, Azure AI services, and operational systems such as Salesforce, on-premises Business Central, and Dayforce.
- Choose the right tool for each need, including when Power Apps, Copilot Studio, or an existing product is a better fit than custom code.
AI Agents and Integrations
- Design and build AI agents and multi-step workflows that retrieve information and take actions across Shermco systems with tool calling and structured outputs, using Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, Claude, or code-first approaches with other approved models.
- Build secure, reusable integrations with business systems, Microsoft Graph, Fabric, and internal APIs, including Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers where appropriate.
- Build solutions handed off by the Forward Deployed AI Engineer that need custom code or a complex agent.
- Build shared templates, connectors, and components so each new application or agent ships faster than the last.
Evaluation, Safety and Reliability
- Build evaluation sets and automated tests that measure AI accuracy, task completion, and failure modes before and after every change.
- Implement guardrails including least-privilege access, human approval for consequential actions such as writes to systems of record, input and output filtering, and protection against prompt injection.
- Partner with the Data & AI Governance Engineer and IT Security to meet data access, security, audit, and responsible AI standards.
User Experience
- Work directly with users to understand workflows and design simple, practical interfaces, including for field users on mobile devices.
- Prototype quickly, test with real users, and iterate based on feedback and usage.
Architecture and Deployment
- Build on approved Azure services such as App Service, Static Web Apps, Functions, and Container Apps, in partnership with Infrastructure.
- Implement authentication and authorization with Microsoft Entra ID and follow secure coding practices.
- Maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated tests, and environments for development, testing, and production.
- Follow architecture and coding standards agreed with IT Products so solutions can be supported or transitioned smoothly over time.
Ownership and Operations
- Own applications and agents after launch, including a light shared support rotation for business-critical solutions and monitoring for errors, quality, cost, latency, and usage.
- Handle bug fixes, dependency and security updates, model and platform version changes, and enhancements.
- Create documentation, runbooks, and user guides that make each solution supportable.
- Track usage and value, and recommend improvements or retirement.
Team Practice
- Use AI-assisted development throughout your work while remaining accountable for quality, security, and maintainability.
- Share knowledge, provide peer review, and help raise software engineering practices across the Data & AI team.
- Stay current as application frameworks and agent tooling evolve.
Qualifications and Skills
Required
- 5+ years of professional full stack development experience, including applications you built and supported in production.
- 1+ years building LLM-powered features or agents used in production, including tool calling, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, and multi-step workflows.
- Strong skills in a modern front-end framework such as React, with TypeScript.
- Strong back-end skills in C#/.NET, Python, or Node.js, including designing and building REST APIs.
- Experience building evaluations or automated tests for AI features.
- Experience with relational databases and SQL.
- Experience deploying and operating applications on Azure or another major cloud platform.
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization, ideally with Microsoft Entra ID, OAuth 2.0, and OpenID Connect, including service principals or managed identities.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
- Ability to work directly with non-technical users to turn needs into simple, usable interfaces.
- Ability to work independently in a small team with evolving priorities.
Preferred
- Experience building with Claude, Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, Copilot Studio, or Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility.
- Experience with Microsoft Agent Framework, Semantic Kernel, LangGraph, or comparable agent frameworks.
- Experience building or using Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
- Knowledge of AI security risks, including prompt injection, data exfiltration, and excessive agency, and how to mitigate them.
- Experience with LLM observability and evaluation tools.
- Experience building mobile-friendly or offline-capable applications for field users.
- Experience with Microsoft Graph, Microsoft Fabric, or Power Platform.
- Experience integrating with Salesforce, on-premises Business Central, Dayforce, or field service platforms.
- Familiarity with secure development practices such as the OWASP Top 10.
- Practical experience using Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or comparable AI tools to accelerate development.
- Background in construction, electrical, field services, or another operations-heavy industry.
What We Offer
- The chance to be the first product engineer on a fast-growing Data & AI team and set how its applications and agents are built
- A small, senior team with real ownership and direct access to leaders in every business function
- Current AI tooling across the Microsoft stack and Claude, with an operating model that favors speed and enabling governance over process for its own sake
- Work that shows up in how a real-world business estimates, schedules, and delivers
