CACI is seeking a skilled and experienced AI/ML Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our dynamic team supporting a Department of Defense (DoD) customer at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Maryland.
This position will work closely with Research & Development (R&D) teams to evaluate, develop, assess, and validate advanced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions. The successful candidate will conduct Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) activities, analyze model performance and effectiveness, and produce technical reports that objectively assess AI/ML capabilities and limitations.
This role is intended for candidates with a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, machine learning theory, and data science. While familiarity with generative AI technologies is desirable, the primary focus is on understanding, evaluating, and improving AI/ML methodologies rather than AI operations, prompt engineering, or application-level integration alone.
The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, scientifically rigorous, and comfortable diving into internally developed, vendor-provided, and research-partner solutions to understand how they work, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with R&D teams throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept development and proposal evaluation through implementation, testing, and transition to operational DoD environments.
  • Evaluate AI/ML models, architectures, and products using quantitative and scientifically rigorous methodologies.
  • Conduct Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) of AI-enabled systems and assess performance, reliability, robustness, security, explainability, and operational suitability.
  • Generate technical reports, white papers, and recommendations regarding model effectiveness, limitations, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with industry partners through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and other collaborative efforts to provide constructive technical feedback on AI/ML products and solutions.
  • Partner with academic researchers and industry organizations to guide research efforts toward mission-relevant applications and measurable outcomes.
  • Assess emerging AI technologies, algorithms, and research developments for applicability to DoD mission requirements.
  • Analyze AI/ML systems for safety, bias, robustness, explainability, and adversarial resilience.
  • Collaborate effectively with software engineers, data scientists, researchers, government stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, technical evaluations, and experimentation efforts.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations to leadership, engineering teams, and customers in a clear and objective manner.
Required Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen with an active Secret security clearance.
  • One of the following education and experience combinations:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline and 8+ years of relevant experience; OR
    • Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field and 6+ years of relevant experience; OR
    • PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Applications
