Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, MD is seeking an AI/ML platform engineer to translate experimental models into scalable, production-ready solutions.

You will design multi-agent systems, fine-tune LLMs, and work across software, data science, and ML to deliver reliable AI capabilities within enterprise tools. Applicants should have a strong Python background and be eligible for U.S. security clearances.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in math, CS, EE or related field.
  • 2+ years of software engineering or ML experience.
  • Experience building production or production-adjacent LLM-powered/agent-based systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and ML stack (PyTorch, NumPy, pandas).
  • Experience with LangChain and/or LangGraph.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker or Podman).
  • Ability to translate concepts into clean, well-documented code.
  • Eligible for Interim Secret clearance by start date and ultimately Secret level clearance (US citizenship).

Responsibilities

  • Work at the intersection of software engineering, data science, and machine learning to turn experimental models into scalable, operation-ready solutions.
  • Design and build multi-agent and single-agent systems using open-source frameworks (LangChain/LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen and successors).
  • Fine-tune LLMs for specific applications using techniques like LoRA; prepare data, run training jobs, evaluate results, and hand off to serving platform.
  • Research and prototype ML algorithms for production tasks, measure performance and limitations, and assess robustness and confidence.
  • Interact with diverse data types and perform data cleaning, normalization, or manipulation as needed.
  • Create visualizations and documentation to explain complex topics to varied audiences.
