Job description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff.

Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place.

Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time.

As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Role

As AI Legal Program Manager, you will play a key role in navigating the legal and regulatory landscape of Block's artificial intelligence initiatives. You will partner with legal, engineering, product, and compliance teams to develop frameworks that enable responsible AI innovation while ensuring regulatory compliance and risk management across our AI products and services.

You will:

  • Drive the development and implementation of AI legal and compliance frameworks, including policies for model development, deployment, and monitoring that align with emerging AI regulations and industry standards.
  • Participate in cross-functional reviews of AI project initiatives to identify legal risks and opportunities, ensuring compliance with regulations while enabling innovation.
  • Develop and maintain AI governance documentation, including model cards, algorithmic impact assessments, training data compliance records, and legal risk assessments.
  • Partner with engineering teams to implement legally compliant AI development practices, including requirements for transparency, fairness, and accountability.
  • Create and maintain processes for AI incident response, model monitoring, and legal compliance validation.
  • Build scalable processes for AI legal reviews across various stakeholders.

You have:

  • 5+ years of directly related experience in technical program management, with at least 2 years focused on AI/ML initiatives in a technology-driven environment.
  • Strong understanding of emerging AI regulations (EU AI Act, state AI laws, etc.) and their practical implementation.
  • Experience developing legal frameworks for AI governance and responsible AI development.
  • Track record of partnering with technical teams to implement legal requirements in AI systems.
  • Understanding of IP considerations in AI development, including training data rights, model ownership, and output licensing.
  • Experience with AI risk assessment methodologies and mitigation strategies.
  • Strong project management skills with experience leading cross-functional initiatives.

Even better:

  • Experience with large language models (LLMs) and generative AI legal considerations
  • Background in open source software licensing and AI model licensing
  • Familiarity with AI ethics frameworks and algorithmic fairness principles
  • Experience with AI procurement and vendor assessment
  • Knowledge of global AI regulatory developments and policy trends
  • Background in privacy law and data protection regulations
  • Technical background or demonstrated ability to understand AI/ML concept
