Job summary

Capital One is seeking an Applied Researcher I to advance AI foundations, including LLM customization, finetuning, and reinforcement learning from human feedback, within the AI Foundations team in New York. You will collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, ML engineers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered customer experiences and scalable AI infrastructure.

The role requires a PhD or MS with experience in applied research, a strong publication record, and hands-on development

Qualifications

PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related field, or MS in same fields plus 2 years of Applied Research experience.
Strong foundation in AI methods and machine learning, with ability to translate research into practical systems.
Experience with open-source ML frameworks and cloud computing platforms.
Publications in ML/NLP or related areas are a plus.

Responsibilities

Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products and production-ready systems.
Leverage technologies such as PyTorch, AWS, HuggingFace, and vector databases to extract insights from large data.
Develop AI foundation models through design, training, evaluation, and deployment.
Conduct high-impact applied research and translate findings into customer-facing experiences.
Translate complex research into actionable business goals and communicate effectively across stakeholders.
