Qualifications

The Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team works across Capital One to advance AI science and engineering. The team develops and deploys proprietary models and platforms that help product teams deliver responsible AI experiences to customers and associates at scale.

About The Role

Capital One is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to shape and deliver foundational AI systems and products. This remote-eligible role offers the opportunity to partner with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers on high-impact work. You will help establish the technical direction for enterprise AI architecture and build production systems involving foundation models, large language models, agents, and multi-model workloads.

The position is open to remote employees. The posted annual salary range is $244,700–$279,200 for remote hires; ranges vary by location, including $269,100–$307,200 in Cambridge, MA and McLean, VA, and $293,600–$335,100 in New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, and San Jose, CA. Pay for other locations will reflect the applicable range and be confirmed in the offer. This role may also include performance-based incentive compensation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least eight years of experience developing AI or ML algorithms or technologies; or a relevant master’s degree and at least six years of that experience.
• At least eight years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.
• Strong engineering and mathematical foundations, with the ability to evaluate research and apply appropriate techniques in production.
• Experience designing, building, integrating, deploying, and supporting complex AI systems on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or an equivalent private cloud.
• Preferred experience includes LLM inference, vector databases and similarity search, guardrails, model optimization, and agentic systems; expertise in balancing cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy; and a record of setting architecture standards and influencing cross-functional leaders.
• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to mentor teams, explain complex concepts, and guide AI solutions from research through evaluation and production.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products for customers and associates.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support foundation model training, LLM inference, agent and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability capabilities.
• Use technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, vector databases, and PyTorch, alongside appropriate open-source and SaaS tools.
• Develop techniques that improve model and system scalability, hardware utilization, latency, throughput, and cost.
• Define technical vision, roadmaps, architecture standards, and deployment practices across enterprise AI teams.
• Own the design and integration of model routing, caching, and orchestration for hybrid and multi-model workloads.
• Promote responsible AI through transparency, reproducibility, and fairness-by-design, while sharing best practices through mentorship and technical communities.
