Job summary

Modal is hiring a Detection & Response Engineer to build scalable detection, investigation tooling, and response capabilities across our platform. You will partner with infrastructure, platform, and security teams to improve resilience and observability.

The role emphasizes automation and AI-powered analysis to accelerate investigations and secure production systems at scale. Ideal candidates have strong security engineering and cloud-native experience.

Qualifications

• Experience in detection engineering, incident response, security engineering, or software engineering with a strong security focus.
• Strong software engineering skills with production systems experience.
• Experience investigating security incidents in cloud-native or distributed environments.
• Familiarity with modern cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, Linux, and networking.
• Experience building detections using logs, telemetry, or large-scale event data.
• Strong SQL skills for investigations and detections.
• Interest in applying AI/LLMs to detection and response.

Responsibilities

• Design and build high-fidelity detections for attacks, abuse, and anomalies across infrastructure and production systems.
• Lead or participate in investigations spanning production and cloud environments.
• Build playbooks and automation to reduce investigation time and improve response consistency.
• Drive post-incident improvements to prevent repeat incidents.
