NJ Advance Media is hiring a data-focused Reporter to turn public records and live data into reporting readers can act on. The role blends reporting and building interactive tools, including maps and lookup pages, with AI-assisted workflows to reduce data-cleaning time.

We seek a fast, adaptable journalist who can pitch data-driven stories that connect to New Jersey residents’ daily lives while maintaining rigorous standards and ethics around AI use and disclosure.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent education and work experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional journalism experience with data-driven reporting.
• Clear engaging writing style that makes numbers human.
• Demonstrated experience using AI tools in professional workflow and understanding limits.
• Familiarity with public data sources (Census, state portals, municipal records).
• Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and take feedback.

Responsibilities

• Produce multiple data stories weekly, including quick-turn pieces tied to breaking news.
• Scrape, clean, join and structure public records and data sets using AI-assisted workflows.
• Create visualizations and interactive pages—tables, maps, lookups, trackers, dashboards—mobile-first.
• Move from idea to working prototype with AI coding tools in days, iterating based on reader use.
• Distribute reach to newsletters, alerts, social video, and subscriber-exclusive tools.
• Interview experts and ordinary people to give numbers a pulse and build sources.
• Ensure accuracy with human review and disclosure policies.
• Collaborate with editors, reporters, designers and audience specialists on joint coverage.
