Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is seeking an AI Data Engineer to design and operate production data pipelines in a Databricks-on-AWS environment. The role focuses on building and governing data assets for AI applications, working closely with the Principal Knowledge & Data Architect and AI Developers.

The position is hybrid, based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with in-person three days per week and visa sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

• Hands-on production data engineering with 4+ years of pipeline work.
• Real production ownership across the lifecycle; not just learning.
• Experience with modern data stack and Databricks-on-AWS.

Responsibilities

• Build AI-facing data pipelines from landing zone to AI-ready data.
• Implement medallion architecture and Delta Lake tables.
• Own workflow orchestration with Databricks Workflows or Airflow.
• Establish data governance, Unity Catalog, and access control.
• Develop embedding pipelines and vector stores for AI use cases.
• Collaborate with K&D Architect, AI Developer, and Operations Capabilities.
