Job summary

IBM Research in San Jose is seeking a highly motivated PhD student for a 2027 summer internship to advance efficient, reliable agentic AI systems for IBM Z. You will design, implement, and evaluate adaptive information-control mechanisms within the Finn/Paver agent framework, collaborating with IBM Research scientists and academic partners.

The role offers exposure to cutting-edge research with potential publications, IP disclosures, and future product impact in enterprise infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, AI, ML, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in machine learning, LLMs, AI agents, NLP, or related AI research areas.
• Strong programming skills in Python and ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Experience designing and evaluating experiments, and developing research prototypes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for technical and business audiences.

Responsibilities

• Research, design, and prototype adaptive information-control mechanisms for agentic AI systems.
• Define and model minimal sufficient agent state including observations and task progress.
• Develop and evaluate information acquisition, retrieval, summarization, and memory management techniques.
• Implement experimental solutions in Python and integrate into Finn/Paver or similar frameworks.
• Design experiments on z/OS management tasks, measuring reliability, memory, latency, and efficiency.
• Analyze tradeoffs between agent performance, information efficiency, and resource use on platform.
• Collaborate with IBM Research scientists and academics to refine algorithms and publish results.
• Document outcomes through reports, presentations, demos, and potential IP disclosures.
