Responsibilities
- Drive up to a 20‑ton truck loaded with compressed gas cylinders, liquid cylinders and hard goods to deliver to customers on a scheduled route.
- Loads/unloads truck; changes out empty cylinders and connects full cylinders at customer site when it can be safely accomplished.
- Picks up empty cylinders from customer sites.
- Records deliveries and pick‑ups on a load manifest and obtains signatures from customers for receipt purposes.
- Operate a tractor‑trailer combination for long‑distance deliveries and off‑loading compressed and liquefied industrial gases to customers or storage sites.
- Listen to and resolve service inquiries and complaints.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections, documenting deficiencies and ensuring all safety items are in good working order.
- Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate driver’s license classification while operating company vehicles and equipment.
- Utilize onboard computer system to ensure accuracy of data.
- Load and unload service trucks with gas cylinders, containers and supplies for scheduled route deliveries as directed by dispatcher.
- Operate a forklift or pallet jack in warehouse to assist with workloads at plant/branch.
- Operate cryogenic dewar fills and deliver compressed cylinders at customer sites following FDA requirements.
- Make deliveries in a timely manner to ensure customer satisfaction; may work extra hours if needed.
- Ensure all documents required to move and deliver the load are available and accurate.
- Perform any non‑route delivery necessary to provide customers with products as scheduled.
- Maintain records promptly and accurately in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations.
- Inspect vehicle for defects before each delivery (pre‑trip) and submit necessary documentation immediately; perform post‑trip inspection upon return.
- Notify management in a timely manner if any equipment or product concerns are identified.
- Perform duties in accordance with company policies and comply with federal, state, local and DOT regulations.
- Collect, record transactions and submit all customer payments promptly to the manager.
- Pull orders from warehouse, load truck and verify truck weight is within DOT compliance before leaving the workplace.
- Provide support to internal and external customers to maintain inventory and delivery needs.
- Maintain neat, clean and professional personal and vehicle appearance.
- If reporting out of a branch, stock shelves, warehouse counters and tables, maintain showroom displays as needed; may perform order entry, process cash and charge orders using SAP.
- Communicate by phone, e‑mail and in person with customers, sales staff, store managers and others, inquiring about and providing information on cost, ordering and delivery times.
- Provide timely communication back to distribution manager or customer’s salesman regarding any changes related to the customer.
- Deliver bulk liquid safely: unload from truck, deliver to customer and supply proper delivery documentation.
- Upload, deliver and download gases to customers’ vessels in a safe manner.
- Follow Airgas guiding principles and essential behaviors as provided on hire and discussed during performance reviews.
- Perform any reasonable work request that falls within the qualifications.
Required Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required Experience
- Minimum one year Class A CDL with Hazmat and Air brake endorsements operating a commercial vehicle with a clean and safe driving record; at least one year of experience driving a tractor‑trailer combination.
- Experience operating a forklift is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of all Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations for commercial drivers.
- Excellent customer service, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to read a map and follow directions to navigate delivery route.
- Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Commitment and desire to work safely and ethically.
- Maintain clean driving record per driver qualification policy.
- DOT pre‑employment and random drug testing applies; must operate in a drug‑free workplace.
