Job summary

The City of Monona is seeking an Afterschool Counselor to plan, coordinate, and lead indoor and outdoor activities for 4K-5th grade students in afterschool and recreational programs. The Youth Program Facilitator ensures supervision, safety, and well‑being of students, providing accommodations for those with disabilities.

This is a school-year, part-time position with flexible scheduling up to 30 hours weekly, Monday–Friday, 2pm–5:45pm, with shift flexibility based on school schedules.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a High School Diploma.
  • Current certification in First Aid/ CPR/AED (or within 3 months of employment).
  • Pursuing a degree related to Child Development, Education, Recreation Management, or similar preferred.
  • Able to work at least 4 hours and up to 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage a group of children to support socialization and positive development.
  • Build positive relationships with participants and foster connections.
  • Provide accommodations and collaborate with staff for active participation, including with disabilities.
  • Plan, implement and document educational, recreational and community activities.
  • Record attendance and submit required documents to the Afterschool Program/Recreation Coordinator.
  • Communicate with families daily about program participants.
  • Inspect facilities, equipment and supplies and ensure they are cleaned and secured daily.
  • Adhere to safety policies and handle emergencies and unusual behaviors.
  • Participate in staff development, supervision, and trainings throughout the school year.

Job description

The Afterschool Counselor helps plan, coordinate, and lead indoor and outdoor activities for 4K-5th grade students, with and without disabilities, in the City’s afterschool and recreational programs. The Youth Program Facilitator is responsible for the supervision, safety, and well-being of students in the programs and also provides support and accommodations to those children with disabilities.

This is a school-year position with flexible scheduling up to a maximum of 30 hours a week. Working hours are Monday-Friday, between , 2pm-5:45pm. Shift hours and days can be flexible with school/class schedules. Your weekly schedule and hours are based on the availability you provide us with.

This position provides valuable professional experience for college students interested in becoming a child psychologist, therapist, psychiatrist, social worker, early childhood educator, an elementary or middle school teacher, naturalist, behavioral specialist, interpreter, camp director, outdoor recreation manager, environmental educator, etc.

The following duties are normal for the position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Effectively manage assigned group of children to facilitate socialization, participation and interaction of children with the goal of fostering the positive development of each child and the group.
  • Build a positive relationship with each participant in your care, and foster positive connections between participants.
  • Provide accommodations, and collaborate with other program staff to ensure active participation of all participants, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Cognitive disabilities, etc.
  • Provide adaptations based on individual needs and utilize positive behavior guidance techniques.
  • Plan, implement and document successful educational, recreation, youth leadership, and community service and arts activities with school-aged children.
  • Record and submit daily attendance records, and any other required documents to Afterschool Program/Recreation Coordinator.
  • Communicate with program families daily with important information regarding program participants.
  • Inspect on a daily basis all facilities, equipment, and supplies and be sure all are accounted for and put away and cleaned at the end of each day.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in a proactive manner, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.
  • Manage emergencies, unusual circumstances and behavior.
  • Embody the core development goals: Physical Literacy, Environmental Literacy, and Social Literacy.
  • Conduct yourself as a professional and representative of the City of Monona with school staff, parents, children and anyone else with whom you come into contact in your role.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of staff development, including weekly supervision, weekly team meetings, pre-service training, and an additional training during the school year.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Must have a High School Diploma
  3. Current certification in Red Cross First Aid/ CPR/AED (or within 3 months of employment)
  4. Candidates who are pursuing a degree in a related field such as Child Development, Education, Recreation Management, or other related field strongly preferred
  5. Must be able to work at least 4 or up to 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday
  6. Experience working with school-age children, providing behavioral support, and leading recreation activities a plus
  1. Excellent communication skills – this position serves as an ambassador for the City and must engage the public in a respectful, professional and positive manner
  2. Must be able to supervise and participate in active recreation programs with children
  3. Ability to provide counsel, comfort, or encouragement to children when necessary
  4. Ability to manage emergencies, unusual circumstances, or unusual behaviors
Minimum Physical Abilities:
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand
  • Ability to see details at a distance
  • Ability to monitor activities, recognize problems, and apply rules to solve them
  • Ability to comprehend rules and work‑related information
