Main Purpose of Job

The After School Program Teacher Aide's responsibility is to design, plan, and implement a comprehensive, educational after school program to promote the physical, cognitive, mental, emotional, and social behavioral growth of Deaf students.

Position Duties

The After School Program (ASP) Teacher Aides use American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary means of communication with students to facilitate the learning process daily and must work with the students to ensure their needs are adequately met. They prep, help, plan, and implement daily activities. They are responsible for checking daily ASP attendance with the school secretary, parent notes, and ensuring students are picked up accordingly. Throughout ASP, they oversee activities, supervision, safety, and conflict intervention/resolution of all students involved. If a field trip is arranged, they are responsible to drive students there, supervise, and drive them back to school. At the end of each day, they are responsible for cleaning up After School Program area or other sites used before leaving work. When necessary, they are responsible to communicate with parents of After School Program students about upcoming activities or daily behavior.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Fluency in ASL and written English required. Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred. Experience in working with deaf and hard of hearing students desired. Knowledge of students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational background required.
Special Requirements
  • New hires subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.
  • Candidates must provide three letters of recommendation with their application.
Benefits
  • Contractual employees working 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. You will pay 25% of the premiums, and the State will subsidize the remaining 75%.
  • Additional coverage options—including dental, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance—may be elected, but you must pay the full premium.
  • Leave may be granted to contractual employees who have worked 120 days in a 12‑month period. Leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
