Job description

OVERVIEW:

The After School Kids Recreation Aide assists with the operation of the After School Kids (ASK) Program and recreational sports activities at The Salvation Army Turlock Corps Community Center. Responsibilities include supporting the ASK Coordinator in planning, supervising, and facilitating program activities; assisting children with homework and school projects; promoting positive family values through appropriate role modeling; and supervising participants during after-school, sports, and game room activities to ensure a safe, engaging, and supportive environment.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Be the liaison between staff, parents and public volunteer groups when the After School Kids Coordinator is out of the office

  • Coordinate and implement the Christian education program. Once the curriculum is selected, you will oversee organizing the material and teaching it to the children once a week

  • Help to plan and implement a disciplinary system. This includes both rewards and consequences and attends all staff meetings

  • Keep open communication with parents, After School Kids/Recreation Director, Corps Assistant and Corps Officer(s)

  • Keep current on new programs, techniques and equipment as resources permit

  • Keep the After School Kids/Recreation Director informed of activities, equipment and facility needs also includes building and/or equipment repairs

  • Be an active, knowledgeable, and participating member of the Corps programs

  • Ensure all equipment is properly stored at the end of each activity/program

  • Develop high-quality programs to meet the recreational needs of the community within the resources available

  • Responsible for the children always during After School Kids Program hours. This includes getting to know each child and encouraging proper behavior, always

  • Recognize potential discipline problems and try to correct them before they come disruptive to the program

  • Bring all serious discipline problems to the attention of the After School Kids/Recreation Director. If results are not seen in a reasonable amount of time, parents may have to be notified, and conference held to try and correct improper attitudes and behavior

  • Ability to record any incidents with appropriate forms. Ouch forms, Incident Reports, Suspected Child Abuse reports (in house and state forms) and Accident reports. As well as faxing and filing all reports through proper channels. Willingness to call Child Protective Services and/or police when needed. (may be required when filing suspected child abuse reports)

  • Responsible to help develop and implement recreational and athletic events in conjunction with After School Kids/Recreation Director. Responsible for set-up and clean-up of all areas used in programming, as needed

  • Responsible for assisting with keeping statistics of After School Kids programs, Recreational programming, and events

  • Other related duties as required


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Age 18 or older

  • CPR and First Aid Training required

  • Comfortable teaching and leading a curriculum that is spiritually based


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, build positive self-esteem, and responsibility

  • Ability to record any incidents with appropriate forms

  • A friendly personality with the ability to be firm, yet loving, while upholding After School Kids Program rules

  • Ability to handle stressful situations and utilize sound judgment in emergency situations. Be able to communicate calmly in crisis

  • Able to treat all ethnic groups equally

  • Comfortable to teach and lead curriculum that is spiritually based


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
