Description

Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU, Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union (BMU), and the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), the Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Operation Programs and Services (OPS), Sustainability and student government.

Associated Students is now hiring for the position of ADVENTURE OUTINGS STUDENT CLIMBING WALL SUPERVISOR. This is a part-time, non-benefited student position that will work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. The pay rate is $17.32 per hour. The schedule for this position is based upon department needs and is subject to change at any time. To be eligible for student employment, you must be enrolled at CSU, Chico and maintain at least 6 units (undergraduate student) or 4 units (graduate student) throughout the course of employment.

Adventure Outings Student Climbing Wall Supervisor
SUMMARY

The Climbing Gym Student Supervisor supports the Student Manager in daily gym operations and staff development. Key responsibilities include helping coordinate Floor Staff schedules, assisting with monthly meetings and technical trainings, and supporting equipment and wall inspections.

This role serves as a communication bridge between the Student Manager and Floor Staff, helping ensure smooth operations and a positive, supportive work environment. The Supervisor should be approachable, flexible, and confident in guiding staff while addressing their needs.

Supervisors are expected to have a strong understanding of all gym operations and be ready to step in as needed. While on the floor, they assist with oversight, engage with climbers, support staff success, and elevate major decisions to the Student Manager when appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with oversight of WREC Climbing Gym
  • Operate office systems (Connect2 and Fusion)
  • Observe climbing and gym activities, promoting a safe mental and physical environment for all
  • Enforce WREC Climbing Gym policies and procedures
  • Meet and greet participants on the floor
  • Report incidents and injuries via Connect2
  • Work to create a fun, inclusive atmosphere
  • Ensure equipment rental process is orderly and efficient
  • Set routes as needed
  • Maintain clean climbing gym environment including holds and wall area
  • Administer belay tests
  • Assist in climbing gym equipment inspections
  • Teach belay and climbing clinics
  • Be responsible for all gym opening and closing duties
  • Be aware of and able to execute proper emergency response behavior and protocols
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Attend staff trainings
  • Other duties may be assigned.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an indoor climbing wall environment with prolonged periods of work both standing and working on a computer and regular contact with others. Participation in various activities, events, and meetings on campus which may include evenings and/or weekends is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
  • Strong knowledge of the sport of climbing and its equipment
  • Ability to handle administrative tasks
  • Must be able to work independently and delegate tasks
  • Ability to supervise employees in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work at least 10 hours a week
  • Ability to undertake hard physical labor in hot/cold/dirty conditions (lifting, moving, using toxic chemicals, etc.)
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Familiarity and experience with indoor climbing wall
  • Knowledge of climbing wall and Wildcat Recreation Center policies
Preferred Requirements:
  • Supervisory experience
Special Requirements:
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire
  • WREC Belay Certification within 30 days of hire
  • WREC Lead Climb/Belay Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Enrolled in at least six units at CSU, Chico.
