Job summary

Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, NM, seeks a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to perform general, cardiac (echocardiography), and vascular ultrasound exams. You will acquire diagnostic images, document findings, and support physicians with procedures while adhering to safety and quality standards.

The role requires licensure in New Mexico and credentials in at least two modalities (AB, OB/GYN, BR, PS, RVT, VS, AE, PE). On-call coverage is required.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent in health science or sonography.
  • Current New Mexico Sonography License required.
  • Credentials in at least two modalities (AB/OB-GYN/BR/PS, RVT/RVS/VS, AE/PE).

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret general ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, and echocardiography examinations according to protocols.
  • Optimize imaging studies using critical thinking and determine when additional imaging is needed.
  • Identify abnormal findings and communicate results to providers promptly.
  • Assist with ultrasound-guided procedures using sterile technique.
  • Prepare patients and equipment, maintain infection control and safety standards.
  • Document exams, charges, preliminary reports in EHR/PACS, and manage images.

Summary:

Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures, including general, cardiac (echocardiography), and vascular examinations, to support physician diagnosis and patient treatment planning. Acquires high-quality digital images and obtains accurate measurements in accordance with modality-specific protocols and standards. Conducts echocardiograms to evaluate cardiac structure, function, and hemodynamics, and performs routine vascular studies to assess for vascular abnormalities and disease. Ensures patient safety and quality care by adhering to established procedures, protocols, and policies. Participates in on-call coverage as required.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform and independently interpret the technical aspects of general ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, and echocardiography examinations in accordance with established protocols and standards.
  • Utilize critical thinking and independent judgment to optimize imaging studies, obtain diagnostic-quality images, and determine when additional imaging or enhancement is required.
  • Identify, assess, and document abnormal findings, communicating critical results to providers in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and ultrasound principles to ensure accurate and complete examinations.
  • Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures, including biopsies and other invasive procedures, utilizing sterile technique and providing procedural support as needed.
  • Prepare patients, exam rooms, and equipment while adhering to patient safety, infection prevention, and high-level disinfection (HLD) standards.
  • Complete accurate exam documentation, charge capture, preliminary reporting, and image management within the electronic health record (EHR) and PACS systems.
  • Maintain effective communication with physicians, nursing units, patients, and interdisciplinary team members regarding exam status and results.
  • Comply with departmental, organizational, accreditation, quality assurance, safety, infection control, and Joint Commission standards and requirements.
  • Support department operations through equipment maintenance, supply management, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for ultrasound students and less experienced staff members.
  • Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, in-services, workshops, and professional development activities.
  • Collaborate as an active team member to prioritize workloads and ensure efficient daily operations.
  • Participate in on-call coverage as required and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education
  • Associate's degree in a related health science field or graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Sonography, or related allied health program preferred.
Licensure
  • Current New Mexico Sonography License required.
Certifications
  • Current certification through one of the following organizations required:
    • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
    • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
    • Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
  • Must possess credentials in at least two (2) qualified sonography modalities upon initial licensure, including any combination of the following:
    • Diagnostic Sonography
      • Abdomen (AB)
      • Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
      • Breast (BR)
      • Pediatric Sonography (PS)
      • ARRT Sonography [ARRT(S)]
    • Vascular Sonography
      • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
      • Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS)
      • ARRT Vascular Sonography [ARRT(VS)]
    • Cardiac Sonography
      • Adult Echocardiography (AE)
      • Pediatric Echocardiography (PE)
