Urgent Care Advanced Practice Provider

JOB SUMMARY:

The Physician Assistant provides non-emergent and occupational health services under the primary administrative supervision of the Medical Director and under the clinical supervision of a licensed physician following established standards and practices.

PRE-REQUISITES: Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant program and licensed as a Physician Assistant in the state of Vermont. Current certification in ACLS.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports To: Medical Director and Lead Physician Assistant; Chief Administrative Officer

Other Contacts: Medical professionals, attorneys, adjusters, case managers, client companies, patients, families, staff and the general public.

SCOPE:

Machinery or Equipment Used: Diagnostic equipment including but not limited to ED Ultrasound Unit, ECG machine, Dinamap blood pressure machine, monitor, defibrillator, slit lamp, portable suction machine, and cast removal saw. Computers, Electronic Health Records.

Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling or crouching. Ability to move quickly in response to emergency care situations.

Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illnesses). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handle emergency or crisis situation. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Required Protective Equipment: Ergonomically correct computer equipment, as well as PPE required on a case by case basis to perform appropriate patient care (eye protection, face protection, goggles, mask, gown, non-sterile medical gloves and sterile medical gloves).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation and follow up for patients seen in Northwestern Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Intermediate Care are of the ED under the supervision of Physician and/or Medical Director.

• Completes timely History and Physical and documentation
• Orders appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures and studies
• Interprets and integrates data to deliver appropriate therapeutic goals
• Utilizes referral services when appropriate
• Provides education to patients on both acute and chronic care of condition.

2. Implements medical care within their limits of privileges, including writing orders for medications, and prescribing out-patient medications according to Vermont Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.

• Maintains current knowledge of regulations and standards of care pertinent to occupational health patients and applies guidance to clearance exams and other appropriate treatment decisions
• Able to set and maintain therapeutic distance with clients.
• May be required to provides on-site care a client companies.

3. Effectively communicates with the patient and the family/support system about the treatment plan, resources and required follow up care.

4. Utilizes the hospitals electronic health record by appropriately documenting all patient interactions.

• Maintains legible, accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnosis, procedures, treatment outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with hospital policies and procedures and regulatory agencies.

5. Actively participates in hospital committees and maintains both a collegial and independent relationship with members of the medical staff and Hospital employees.

6. Demonstrates support of and assists with the execution of cost saving process improvement initiatives. Partners with other departments of the hospital to ensure efficient flow of patients.
