Position: Physician Assistant – ICU
Location: Nebraska Methodist Hospital, 8303 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE
Work Schedule: 12‑hour night shifts rotating weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Provides primary health care for patients.
Responsibilities
- Provides primary health care for patients by employing assessment and diagnosis of health status, developing and implementing treatment plans, and monitoring patient outcomes.
- Obtains patient’s medical history; prioritizes data collection based on immediate condition.
- Determines patient’s mental status.
- Collaborates with physicians and other disciplines, giving regular consistent feedback.
- Uses new or additional data to inform treatment plans.
- Incorporates research into clinical practice.
- Performs advanced assessments on complex patients and develops specific interventions to prevent iatrogenic complications.
- Provides patient and family education on medication usage and health/illness prevention to ensure adequate knowledge and awareness.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to family regarding need for timely patient information.
- Works collaboratively with physicians and other team members to deliver education tailored to patient and family capabilities.
- Applies adult learning principles, checking for understanding and providing follow‑up.
- Recommends resources such as printed materials, online resources, and community information.
- Prepares prescription orders, inquiries, and renewals to facilitate patient care.
- Implements interventions consistent with the established plan of care safely and appropriately.
- Applies established therapeutic practices to patient problems.
- Prescribes medications in accordance with DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificate.
- Generates referrals to appropriate services as needed to further diagnose and progress care.
- Administers medications and immunizations via injection, inhalation or oral methods.
- Performs patient consultations and physical exams independently and under physician direction, including history, vital signs, relevant tests, and documentation.
- Obtains medical and psychosocial history; performs physical exam; assesses mental status.
- Collaborates with physicians and other clinical disciplines. Provides teaching and education specific to patient health‑care problem.
- Orders appropriate ancillary tests.
- Develops preliminary diagnosis and prescribes diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Uses assessment techniques and diagnostic information.
- Performs tests and records findings.
- Orders ancillary tests and derives diagnosis as data becomes available.
- Provides care specific to patient age, ensuring understanding and comfort as outlined in "Age Specific Criteria."
- Identifies opportunities for individualized customer service/patient care.

- Keeps abreast of and follows policy & procedures.
- Follows medical protocols and maintains certification/licensure.
- Follows guidelines of regulatory bodies such as FDA.
- Maintains complete patient records.
- Documents data appropriately.
- Documents individualized treatment plans reflecting patient needs.
- Documents interventions.
- Documents consultations with other practitioners/physicians.
- Evaluates patient care to determine response to interventions for optimal outcome.
- Assesses patient capabilities and limitations related to nursing and medical interventions.
- Recognizes and addresses patient and family capabilities and limitations.
- Returns patient telephone calls.
- Monitors outcomes and documents patient response.
- Performs telephone triage to determine special needs.
- Seeks new treatment methods to ensure progress.
- Participates in performance improvement and outcome management.
- Meets regularly with medical director for chart reviews.
- Identifies concerns in patient care & follows up per policy.
- Participates in patient satisfaction and quality improvement initiatives.
- Tracks variances in care.
- Uses knowledge of study design and statistics to develop protocols.
- Ensures Medicare and IRB compliance with research studies.
- Facilitates or participates in care conferences to review medical plans.
- Leads debriefing sessions for multidisciplinary team.

Job Requirements
Education
- Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC‑PA).
Experience
- Minimum of three years clinical experience required.
- Experience in acute care and/or clinic setting as a Physician Assistant preferred.
License/Certifications
- Current, valid PA license in the state working without restrictions.
- American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months.
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Adult Gerontology Acute Care Certification required.

- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate and interact with patients, families, hospital personnel, and coworkers.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
