• Participate in onboarding and 24/7 CTICU operations with in-house intensivist support.
• Contribute to education of nursing and resident staff and to quality improvement initiatives.

Job description

The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington invites applications for six (6) full-time Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care (CTICU) Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant positions. The role will support the rapid expansion and growth of the CTICU unit at the University of Washington Montlake Campus and requires candidates to support the department’s commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service within a diverse and inclusive academic community.

The position provides a faculty appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate in the Department of Surgery with an anticipated start date in Fall 2026. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12‑month service period (July 1–June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent terms. Faculty with 12‑month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12‑month period, providing an equivalent of one month for paid time off.

Base salary range: $10,326 – $15,391 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Relocation assistance may be available for out‑of‑state candidates.

Responsibilities

• Provide independent and collaborative patient management from admission to transfer of care to the acute care setting.
• Work on a dedicated cardiothoracic inter‑professional team with other established APPs, critical care physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, and multidisciplinary staff.
• Perform bedside ICU procedures including central line and arterial line placements, bronchoscopy, and point‑of‑care ultrasound.
• Operate within a 24/7 dedicated CTICU in‑house intensivist support framework.
• Complete comprehensive 3–4 month 1:1 precepted onboarding with an experienced critical care APP team.
• Adhere to a flexible schedule with rotating day, night, and weekend coverage requirements.
• Participate in the education of nursing and resident staff.
• Engage in quality improvement projects and process improvement activities for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

• Current and valid Washington State Registered Nurse Licensure for ARNP or Physician Assistant licensure for PA‑C.
• Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or accredited Physician Assistant Program.
• National certification as an ARNP/PA and eligibility for DEA registration.
• Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment.
• Effective interpersonal and leadership skills.
• ACLS certification.
• Proficient communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Basic computer proficiency and command of personal computer skills.
• Prior critical care or cardiothoracic surgery experience strongly preferred; highly motivated new graduates with relevant critical‑care and cardiothoracic surgical training may be considered with an extended onboarding period.

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range Minimum: $123,912.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum: $184,692.00 annual
