Job description

Advanced Practice Provider, Emergency Department – Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Emergency Department (ED) at UVA Health is an integral member of a dynamic, expanding emergency medicine team. This role supports high-quality, patient-centered care across multiple clinical environments, including the Main Emergency Department, ED Observation Unit, and Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) area. The APP will practice in a fast-paced academic medical center with progressive autonomy, practicing at the top of licensure and scope while collaborating closely with attending physicians, residents, nursing, and interprofessional team members.

The APP will rotate through days, nights, weekends, and holidays, with shift lengths varying based on the specific clinical assignment. This position is well-suited for an APP who thrives in a complex environment, values flexibility, seeks procedural exposure, and demonstrates intellectual curiosity and commitment to lifelong learning.

The APP will be welcomed into UVA's Center for Advanced Practice, the professional home for APPs across the health system, and will work under the direct clinical oversight of the UVA School of Medicine's Department of Emergency Medicine, which oversees the ED's medical practice.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior emergency medicine or urgent care experience in a high-acuity, high-volume setting, including exposure to rapid assessment models and observation medicine.
  • Demonstrated procedural experience or strong interest in procedural skill development, such as laceration repair, splinting, point-of-care ultrasound, airway support, or vascular access, consistent with scope and credentialing.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center or teaching environment, with comfort collaborating alongside residents, fellows, and medical students.
  • Strong adaptability and clinical judgment in fast-paced, evolving care environments, with the ability to manage multiple patients and transition effectively between clinical roles (Main ED, RME, Observation).
  • Commitment to professional growth and team engagement, including participation in continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, or departmental projects through the Center for Advanced Practice or Department of Emergency Medicine.

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

Core Responsibilities
Leadership
  • Serve as a clinical leader within the ED care team, modeling professionalism, accountability, and patient-centered care.
  • Support a collaborative, respectful culture across physicians, APPs, nurses, trainees, and ancillary staff.
  • Contribute to the ongoing growth and maturation of the APP team through mentorship, peer support, and role modeling.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and leadership presence during periods of high census, operational strain, or clinical complexity.
Administrative
  • Adhere to departmental policies, clinical pathways, and quality and safety standards.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives related to quality improvement, patient throughput, documentation excellence, and operational efficiency.
  • Support accurate, timely documentation, billing, and compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Engage in scheduling flexibility to meet the evolving operational needs of a 24/7 emergency department.
Clinical
  • Provide comprehensive emergency care across the Main ED, ED Observation Unit, and Rapid Medical Evaluation space.
  • Perform timely patient assessments, develop differential diagnoses, initiate diagnostic and therapeutic plans, and reassess patients as clinically indicated.
  • Practice with progressive autonomy at top-of-scope, with appropriate consultation and escalation based on patient acuity and complexity.
  • Demonstrate interest and competence in emergency procedures consistent with training, credentialing, and departmental needs.
  • Deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate care in a high-acuity, fast-paced academic environment.
Professional
  • Maintain active licensure, national certification, credentialing, and continuing education requirements.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through continuing education, skills training, and clinical learning opportunities.
  • Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and commitment to evidence-based practice and evolving standards of emergency care.
  • Participate in professional activities through the Center for Advanced Practice and Department of Emergency Medicine, including education, committees, or scholarly efforts as appropriate.
