Job summary

WVU Medicine seeks an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) to provide high-quality pediatric ICU care as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team. The APP will assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within their scope, coordinating care with physicians, nurses, and educators.

The role requires NP or PA credentials, WV licensure eligibility, pediatric critical care experience preferred, and BLS with ALS.

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the APP assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice and area of specialty. The APP is responsible for delivering evidence-based care, promoting positive patient outcomes, maintaining professional and regulatory standards, and supporting the clinical, educational, and operational goals of the department and organization.

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Advance Practice Professional (APP) is an individual with clinical and medical skills with anexpertisein the care of pediatric ICU patients. The APP completes comprehensive patient health evaluations (including biological,socialand psychological assessments),taking into accounttheir co-morbid conditions and overalldisposition;in collaboration with theappropriate clinical/facultyteam. The APPassesses, andcoordinates the educational and psychosocial needs of the patient and caretakers. The APP develops and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team,participatesin directing that care, and education of staff and student learners (as applicable). The APPparticipatesin the education of residents and medical/nursing students and performs diagnostic procedures and therapeutic procedures.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable.Suchservicemayinclude, butare not limited to.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER :
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION,AND/ORLICENSURE:
  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program withMaster’s Degree in Nursing(or MEC approved equivalent).
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association BLS CertificationrequiredwithadditionalAdvanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Pediatric ICU, acutecareor pediatric experience preferred.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS :
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION,AND/ORLICENSURE:
  • PNP-AC preferred; PNP-PC or FNP would be considered withadditionalcertification at the discretion of the department.
  • PALS at the discretion of the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT :
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION,AND/ORLICENSURE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’sdegree asPhysicianAssistant required.
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training programrequired.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistantsrequired.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certificationrequiredwith PALS at the discretion of the department.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for pediatric ICU patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization.
  • Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations.
  • Completes integrated assessments.
  • With the collaboration of pediatric ICU faculty or by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols,ordersadditionaltests or consults asdeemedappropriate.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consults and communicates with hospital staffregardingabnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
  • Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medicalrecord.
  • Facilitates patient discharge and/or follow-up by coordinatingappropriate servicesand tests prior to discharge necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).
  • Performs necessary procedures following established clinical guidelines and protocols and Scope of Practice (SOP).
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for pediatric ICU patients, which includes immediate pre and postoperative care, teaching, dischargeplanningand necessary referral to other members of the health careteamas necessary.
  • Demonstratesexpertisein caring for patients across theagecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
  • Participate in physician and interdisciplinary team rounds (as applicable).
  • Identifiesunstable or complex pediatric ICU patient care situations andfacilitatesappropriate interventionin the clinic and/or hospital setting.
  • Recognizesemergentsituations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Evaluates pediatric ICU patients and serves as a coordinator for student medical/nursing educationregardingmanagement, performingappropriate proceduresand interpretation of diagnostic studies.
  • Assistsin the collection of outcome measures (as applicable).
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification,evaluationand management of the individual needs of patients/families.
  • Demonstrates the ability toutilizeequipment in a safe manner.
  • Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientific principles,establishedstandards of care and/or research findings.
  • Utilizes teaching/learning theory andappropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients,familiesand the community.
  • Promotes an environment thatfacilitateslearning by responding toappropriate patient/familypreferences, patient managementprioritiesand benchmarks of learning as an educator.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient/family teaching and collaborates with the nursing and clinical staff in the completion of education plan.
  • Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Completes all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serves as a resource person for staff and student learners caring for the pediatric ICU patient.
  • Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel inareaof expertise.
  • Mentors nursing personnel, medical/nursinglearnersand student learners in all levels of clinical practice.
  • Participates in community programs, distribution of literature, asappropriate inarea of expertise.
  • Communicates effectively with patients/families, physician interdisciplinary team members, medical/nursing learners, studentlearnersand ancillary services at all levels toassurecoordinated efficient patient care.
  • Documents the plan of care,interventionsand evaluations in a clear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’s medical record following approved hospital/UHA policies and compliance standards for documentation.

  • Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in the delivery of care to pediatric ICU patients and families throughout the inpatient hospitalization, and the ambulatory setting.
  • Participates and provides leadership for education,committeesand task forces.
  • Documents hours andsubmits billing reports, as appropriate.
  • Participates in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan.
  • Applies information from Performance Improvement activities, changing practice as necessary, to improve care provided to patients.
  • Reviews and interprets pediatric ICU data from sources such as patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschangesas necessary.
  • Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assists Faculty, Administrators and Directors in the collection of outcome measures.
  • Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for UHA Employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values & Culture.
  • Other duties/projects as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Heavy/Hard Work:Workrequiresstrength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing, walking, and carrying of patients, materials and equipment weighting 40+ pounds.
