JOB TITLE & CODE: ADVANCED PRACTICE PROFESSIONALS –Cardiology, Section of Electrophysiology (85001) or Physician Assistant (85101)
DEPARTMENT: Department of Cardiology, Section of Electrophysiology
REPORTS TO: Administrator, Faculty Supervisor, Department Chair, OAPP
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY: The Advanced Practice Professional (APP)has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensivemanagement of cardiology/electrophysiology patients, (includingbiological, social and psychological assessments). The APPcoordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teamsnecessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinicalteam, participates in directing that care, performsdiagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, andcoordinates discharge planning (as applicable). The APPparticipates in the education of residents and medical/nursingstudents.
Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include but are not limited to.
Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner
- Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRNCertification Centers
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of thedepartment.
Experience
- Cardiology/electrophysiology or acute care experiencepreferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Education, certification, and/or licensure
- AGACNP certification preferred. FNPs will be considered.
Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant
- Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant, or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) trainingprogram required.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification ofPhysician Assistants required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board ofMedicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of thedepartment.
Experience
- Cardiology/electrophysiology or acute care experiencepreferred.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages comprehensive and individualized care forcardiology/electrophysiology patients and their families in theinpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post discharge inthe ambulatory setting.
- Completes daily rounds; consults and/orpre-procedure/evaluations.
- Participates in electrophysiology conduction studies includingbut not limited to management/monitoring of implantable devices.
- Completes integrated assessments.
- With the collaboration of cardiology/electrophysiology facultyor by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols,orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate.
- Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
- Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations anddocuments findings in medical record.
- Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care forcardiology/electrophysiology patients, which includes teaching,discharge planning, ongoing monitoring of implantable devicesand/or necessary referral to other members of the health care teamas necessary.
- Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
- Identifies unstable or complex cardiology/electrophysiology patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention inthe clinic and/or hospital setting.
- Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
- Evaluates cardiology/electrophysiology patients and serves as acoordinator for follow up procedures and tests in the ambulatorysetting (as applicable).
- Assists in the collection of outcome measures (as applicable).
- Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation and management of the individual needs of patients/families.
- Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.
- Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.
- Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospitalstaff, students, patients, families and the community.
- Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by respondingto appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readinessto learn.
- Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
- Completes all identified clinical competencies.
- Serves as a resource person for staff caring for thecardiology/electrophysiology patient.
- Provides educational programs to professional andparaprofessional personnel in area of expertise.
- Participates in community programs, distribution of literature,as appropriate in area of expertise.
- Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in aclear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’smedical record following approved hospital/UHA policies andcompliance standards for documentation.
- Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectivelyachieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provides leadership in the development and implantation ofchanges in the cardiology/electrophysiology practice thatpositively impact patient outcomes.
- Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff tofacilitate creative problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participates and initiates inter-disciplinary approaches topatient care, program development and education. Serves as a professional role model.
- Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in thedelivery of care to cardiology/electrophysiology patients andfamilies throughout the inpatient hospitalization, and theambulatory setting.
- Participates and provides leadership for committees and taskforces.
- Documents hours and submits billing reports, asappropriate.
- Reviews and interprets cardiology/electrophysiology data fromsources such as patient registries, clinical and financial reports,length of stay, access to care, and cost per case reports andrecommends/implements changes as necessary.
- Participates in clinical trials and research studies with thePrincipal Investigator.
- Assists cardiology/electrophysiology Faculty, Administratorsand Directors in the collection of outcome measures.
- Other duties/projects as assigned.
