Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ seeks an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) focused on prenatal care. Working under a physician collaboration, you will be credentialed by the medical staff and provide comprehensive health assessments, diagnoses, and treatments to pregnant patients.

You will conduct rounds on OB/GYN units, educate patients and families, monitor medications, and coordinate care with Clinical Care Coordinators and navigators.

Qualifications

  • RN license and NJ registration required.
  • Master's degree in PMHNP or equivalent and eligible for certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; creative problem solving.
  • Minimum two years of clinical nursing experience; current BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect comprehensive patient data/history and interpret tests.
  • Complete medication reconciliation for each visit.
  • Conduct rounds on F-Green, Labor & Delivery, Outpatient Pediatrics and OB/GYN units; assess risks.
  • Provide medical and psychiatric care in inpatient, ED, medical floors, and outpatient clinics.
  • Educate patients and families to maximize insurance use and adherence to care plans.
  • Monitor medications for adverse effects and intervene as needed.
  • Coordinate continuity of care with Clinical Care Coordinators and staff.

About The Role

The advanced practice nurse (APN) is a skilled health provider who through a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician is credentialed through the medical staff office. As a member of the medical staff the APN demonstrates standards of professional practice that includes ethical decision making, job activities related to quality assessment/improvement, self- evaluation, leadership, and research. The APN is self-directed and purposeful in seeking necessary knowledge and skills to develop and maintain competency. In this role, with a specialized focus on prenatal patients, the APN will utilize critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis, and the prescribing of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in the direct management of patients diagnosed with a variety of medical/psychiatric conditions/diseases. The APN practice will promote maternal and fetal wellness through patient education, preventative care and participation in research initiatives. Functioning both autonomously and as part of an interdisciplinary team, the APN serves as a clinical resource and consultant, supporting coordinated care across the prenatal continuum.

What You’ll Do
  • Collects comprehensive patient health data/history including past and present medical, surgical, family and social history. Diagnostic tests and procedures relevant to the patient’s status are collected and interpreted.
  • Completes the medication reconciliation process by documenting the current list of medications (including over the counter and nutritional supplements) taken by patient at each visit.
  • Conducts clinical rounds on F-Green, Labor & Delivery, Outpatient Pediatrics and OB/GYN units. Proactively identifies patients with elevated maternal depression or psychiatric risk factors and ensures comprehensive pre- discharge engagement.
  • Provides medical and psychiatric care to patients on the Inpatient unit, in the ED, on medical floors and/or in the Outpatient Clinics.
  • Provides education to patients and families to maximize their utilization of insurance, resources, and physician recommended care practices to improve overall quality of life.
  • Monitors intended and potential side effects of medications and treatments ordered and will offer appropriate, accepted interventions.
  • Provides monitoring and continuity of care between departments/services; collaborates with Clinical Care Coordinators, Patient Navigators, and medical staff to coordinate continuity of care.
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring
Required
  • A current Registered/Professional Nurse license and registration in the state of New Jersey is required.
  • Completion of a master’s degree program, MSN – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MSN-PMHNP) or Post Master’s Degree Certification and eligible forcertification by a national certifying body.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and creative problem solving are essential.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience and current BLS certification are required.
Credential Required
  • Current NJ License and Registration; Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse, by the Board of Nursing, with specialization as indicated; BLS

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is US/07S: $136,294 - $155,115.29 - $180,084.03. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs. The expected salary range for this position is in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
