Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Kansas City VA Medical Center, invites applications for an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide comprehensive mental health services and advanced clinical practice.

You will diagnose, treat, and manage care for Veterans, prescribe medications, provide psychotherapy, educate patients and families, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans.

Responsibilities

• Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently evaluate, diagnose, and treat Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and other modalities.
• Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions, preventive measures, and prescribed treatments.
• Demonstrates leadership and collaborates with MH and specialty care professionals in treatment plan development with Veterans and families.
• Assesses and adjusts the plan of care to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders.
• Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
• Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.

Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) works in the Mental Health Services at the Kansas City VA Medical Center and provides comprehensive mental health services - advanced clinical practice - consultation - and care management. He/She practices to the full extent of education - training - and certification - with responsibilities defined by clinical privileges and supported by prescriptive authority.

Duties

• Duties include - but are not limited to: Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently evaluate - diagnose - provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications - psychotherapy - and other modalities
• Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions - preventive measures - and prescribed treatments
• Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other MH and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate) - in treatment plan development
