Job summary

Boom Technology is seeking a flexible Advanced Manufacturing Technician to work across multiple processes, turning ideas into real parts with engineers. You’ll join a fast-paced R&D environment where learning is constant and the parts you build power innovative engines, with safety and precision at the core.

You will collaborate with engineers to iterate designs, set up development trials, and document outcomes.

Job description

Boom is building Superpower, a first-of-its-kind industrial gas turbine, and Overture, a supersonic airliner - machines that demand some of the most complicated manufacturing processes that can’t be easily outsourced. Our Advanced Process team is vertically integrating those challenging processes: metal and ceramic additive, investment casting, heat treatment, materials testing, and everything in between. We need a generalist technician who can work hand-in-hand with our engineers to turn ideas into real parts, fast.

Not a single-process operator

Most technician jobs put you on one machine, running one qualified process, all day. You get very good at one thing, and the interesting decisions get made without you.

What you'll do
  • Fabricate, build, and finish real parts across many processes - additive (metal, ceramic, polymer), investment casting, heat treatment, and general shop and lab work.
  • Work directly with Advanced Process engineers to take rough concepts and get hardware in hand fast - then iterate.
  • Set up and run development trials, capture what happened, and feed results back so the process gets better.
  • Handle the materials safely and cleanly - powder, wax, ceramic, hot metal, chemicals - with a relentless focus on safety.
  • Perform routine cleaning, first-line maintenance, and troubleshooting on the equipment you run.
  • Help build out and organize the labs and shop areas: tooling, consumables, workflow, and the work instructions the team will run on.
This job is demanding

The process you need often won't exist yet - you'll help invent it, and most of what you try won't work the first time. The domains are broad and you'll be learning constantly. The parts you make go into real engines, so your safety discipline, craft, and documentation have to be absolute. If a build looks off, we need to know that more than we need it to look finished.

You probably have
  • Hands-on fabrication or lab experience across more than one domain - machining/finishing, welding/brazing, additive, casting, composites, heat treat, assembly, or materials-lab work.
  • A track record of teaching yourself new machines and processes.
  • The ability to read engineering drawings and CAD, and connect design intent to how a part gets built.
  • Solid documentation habits and the ability to communicate clearly with engineers about what you tried and saw.
  • Comfort in a fast-paced, ambiguous R&D environment where the procedure is still being written - and resilience when things fail.
It would be great if you have
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, medical, or another high-performance environment.
  • Additive manufacturing experience (metal LPBF, SLA, ceramic, or polymer).
  • Investment casting, wax/ceramic, or foundry experience.
  • Heat treatment, furnace operation, or metallography / materials-lab experience.
  • Experience helping stand up or organize a new lab or shop area.

There's no equivalent seat at an established OEM, where the processes already exist and someone else already decided how to run them.

Compensation

The Base Rate for this position is $29 to $43 per hour. Actual rate will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.
