Divergent is hiring an Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance Specialist in California to maintain and improve CNC machines, robotics, and automation systems. You will diagnose complex failures, develop maintenance strategies, and drive reliability across our aerospace/automotive manufacturing platform.

The role emphasizes preventive/predictive maintenance, calibration, and process improvement with a focus on reducing downtime and increasing capabilities.

Responsibilities

Purpose

Divergent is on the lookout for an adept and driven Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance Specialist dedicated to the maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of our current and forthcoming advanced manufacturing equipment. This role will have a strong focus on CNC machining systems, industrial robotics, automation, and associated manufacturing equipment. The Role

• Own the technical performance and reliability of advanced manufacturing equipment by developing, validating, and implementing maintenance strategies, diagnostic methods, and equipment improvements that maximize machine availability, production throughput, quality, and equipment life.
• Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, controls, robotics, CNC, and automation failures; determine underlying root causes; and develop effective corrective and preventive actions that eliminate recurring issues. Assist with intra-facility equipment relocations and installations as needed.
• Apply advanced maintenance expertise to analyze, troubleshoot, optimize, and improve CNC machines, robotic systems, automation cells, and supporting equipment where standard procedures are insufficient.
• Design, refine, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance procedures, calibration methodologies, troubleshooting workflows, and equipment operating standards based on technical analysis and operational data.
• Execute advanced mechanical, electrical, controls, CNC, robotic, and system calibration activities requiring independent technical judgment to maintain demanding precision and process capability requirements.
• Analyze equipment performance trends, failure modes, maintenance history, and production data to identify opportunities for improved reliability, reduced downtime, increased equipment capability, and lower operating costs.
• Troubleshoot and optimize PLC logic, CNC controls, robot programs and interfaces, safety systems, motion control, automation interfaces, and equipment configurations to improve system performance and operational robustness.
• Serve as the technical maintenance subject matter expert for assigned CNC, robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing systems, providing guidance to production, manufacturing engineering, quality, and maintenance teams. Communicate machine status effectively, along with estimated repair timelines and recovery plans.
• Interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams, CNC documentation, robotic system documentation, control architectures, and equipment manuals to solve novel technical problems and develop effective solutions. Adhere strictly to all safety protocols.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives supporting production capability, equipment reliability, quality systems, and manufacturing excellence, including applicable requirements associated with AS9100, IATF 16949, and other relevant standards.
• Develop technical documentation including preventive maintenance standards, troubleshooting guides, calibration procedures, work instructions, equipment specifications, and best practices while mentoring technicians in their application.
• Evaluate and recommend equipment modifications, component upgrades, controls improvements, spare-parts strategies, tooling changes, and process improvements that improve long-term system performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with equipment suppliers, controls engineers, manufacturing engineers, robotics engineers, production personnel, and cross-functional technical teams to resolve complex technical challenges and implement sustainable solutions.
• Support the installation, commissioning, qualification, and ramp-up of new CNC machines, robotic systems, automation equipment, and other advanced manufacturing technologies.
• Perform additional technical responsibilities as required to advance manufacturing capability, equipment reliability, and departmental objectives

Basic Qualifications

• Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to U.S. export controls.
• A Bachelor's degree in a technical field or an Associate's degree in a technical field and equivalent maintenance technician work experience. Strong equivalent maintenance technician experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining CNC machine tools, industrial robotics, automated manufacturing systems, or other advanced production equipment.
• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and repair experience, including the ability to diagnose complex equipment failures across multiple disciplines.
• Experience with CNC controls, PLCs, industrial robots, motion control, and automated machine systems.
• Hands-on experience working with advanced manufacturing equipment in a factory or production environment.
• Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced, startup manufacturing environment.
• Strong ability to think and work autonomously when required, and to perform under pressure while logically troubleshooting complex systems and processes.
• Ability to effectively use a wide variety of hand tools, electrical test equipment, diagnostic equipment, and other maintenance tools.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills, particularly related to technical records, maintenance documentation, troubleshooting reports, and presentations.
• Solid interpersonal skills, capable of working within a small, growing team and interfacing effectively with engineering, manufacturing, production, and quality groups to understand the production system and associated constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting CNC machine tools, including multi-axis machining centers, turning centers, or other precision machining equipment.
• Experience with industrial robotics, including robot troubleshooting, programming, calibration, teach pendant operation, and integration with automated manufacturing cells.
• Experience with CNC controls and automation platforms such as Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Okuma, Mazak, or similar systems.
• Experience with PLC and automation platforms such as Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, or similar systems.
• Experience with servo motors, drives, encoders, motion-control systems, safety circuits, and industrial communication networks.
• Experience with automated material handling systems, robotic cells, machine tending, vision systems, or other integrated manufacturing automation.
• Experience with machine installation, commissioning, alignment, calibration, and equipment qualification.
• Experience using condition-monitoring or predictive-maintenance techniques to improve equipment reliability.
• Experience working in aerospace, automotive, or other high-precision manufacturing environments.
• Experience with metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) equipment or other advanced manufacturing technologies is a plus but is not required for consideration.

Work Environment

• The person in this position needs to frequently work in a factory environment to access, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair machinery, potentially up to 100% of the workday.
• Ability to walk, kneel, reach, climb, work in confined or awkward positions, and use hands to operate tools and machinery in an industrial production environment, as required.
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., as required to execute a repair, maintenance activity, or equipment installation.
• Ability to work around operating CNC machines, industrial robots, automated equipment, electrical systems, and other industrial machinery while following established safety procedures.

Compensation

At Divergent, our pay range is based on the level of the job. For this role, we will consider candidates at levels Specialist 3 - Specialist 4 as evaluated through our interview process.

• Specialist Level 3 / S03: $42 - $57
• Specialist Level 4 / S04: $48 - $66
