Los Alamos National Laboratory's Safeguards Science and Technology Group (NEN-1) invites applications for an R&D Scientist 3 to support the Advanced Detectors Team. The role focuses on developing analytical instrumentation and methods for precision measurement of nuclear materials using X-ray, gamma-ray, and decay-energy spectroscopy.
You will contribute to data-processing algorithms, uncertainty quantification, and software for spectral analysis, instrument operation, and user-facing analysis
The Safeguards Science and Technology Group (NEN-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a highly motivated and technically accomplished R&D Scientist 3 to support the Advanced Detectors Team in a casual appointment.
The Advanced Detectors Team develops analytical instrumentation and methods for precision measurement and characterization of nuclear materials using advanced X-ray, gamma-ray, and decay-energy spectroscopy. Research supports basic science, international nuclear safeguards, nuclear nonproliferation, and national security applications.
The team's research portfolio includes advanced low-temperature detector technologies, including large arrays of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters using microwave SQUID multiplexing readout and cryogenic systems operating below 0.1 K. These technologies provide ultra-high-resolution measurements that enable new approaches to nuclear material characterization and quantitative analysis.
A major objective of the Advanced Detectors effort is to increase the technology readiness level of microcalorimeter-based measurements and quantitative analysis methods and transition these technologies toward complete analytical instruments. These systems must reliably produce calibrated spectra and spectral images that can be interpreted by end users. Important areas of development include data-processing algorithms, quantitative spectral analysis, uncertainty quantification, instrument performance characterization, and implementation of analytical capabilities in accessible scientific software.
The selected candidate will apply significant technical expertise and independent judgment to support ongoing R&D activities and development of new measurement and analysis capabilities. Responsibilities may include:
Position requires a Master's Degree in experimental physics or a closely related discipline and six years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, a Ph.D. may be preferred.
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Due to federal restrictions contained in the current National Defense Authorization Act, citizens of the People's Republic of China-including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau-as well as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation, who are not Lawful Permanent Residents("green card" holders) are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, which includes Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. Our generous benefits package includes:
Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre‑employment background checks.
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.
Regular‑status Laboratory employees applying for term‑status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
