Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (FMP) is seeking an Instrumentations and Control (I&C) Systems Engineer to design and support I&C used to operate the Virginia Class submarine reactor plant. You will work with experts across disciplines to ensure I&C supports safe and reliable reactor protection and control functions.

The role involves defining requirements, troubleshooting instrumentation, and developing recommendations for improvements, with a focus on data analysis and fleet reliability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field with 4+ years of experience; or Master's with 2+ years; or Doctorate in related field; or Advanced Reactor Training Engineer/Refueling Engineer/RPCO at the Company.
  • Experience with electrical safety, project management, interfacing with Navy personnel, and reactor instrumentation and control is preferred.
  • Strong communication and teamwork, initiative, and attention to detail are valued.

Responsibilities

  • Define system level requirements for design changes and modifications.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation problems to support Virginia Class reactor plants.

Job Description

The Instrumentations and Control (I&C) Systems Engineer will work on the design and support of I&C used to operate the Virginia Class submarine nuclear reactor plant. This involves becoming an expert in one of our various areas of I&C responsibilities; these include sensor technology, failure/fault analysis, power electronics, and procedure development. The system engineer works with experts across various engineering/science disciplines (e.g., mechanical, nuclear, computer, software, and electrical) to ensure the I&C can support safe and reliable reactor protection and control safety critical functions.

Typical roles and responsibilities include:
  • Defining system level requirements for design changes and modifications
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation problems needed to support the Virginia Class reactor plants
  • Develop technical recommendations/reports for equipment or procedure improvements
  • Data analysis to identify fleet issues
  • Support innovation initiatives to help improve I&C and minimize fleet maintenance burden
Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science field; or Currently an Advanced Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Pay Range

$86,100.00 - $134,600.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
