Job summary

Quantinuum in Broomfield, CO is seeking an AMO Theory Architect to help design the next generation of large-scale quantum computers. You will work with hardware architecture teams to define system-level requirements, perform numerical simulations of quantum operations, and guide technology insertions across subsystems.

The role requires a PhD and a minimum of five years in quantum science, with U.S. person status due to contractual and security requirements.

Qualifications

  • PhD completed prior to starting.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in quantum information, ion trapping, qubits, atomic physics, numerical simulation, spectroscopy, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, cryogenics, lasers, photonics, or lab work in physical sciences.
  • U.S. Person defined as citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder.
  • U.S. government security rules restrict non-US/non-citizen nationals from this role.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize large scale quantum computers with hardware architecture teams.
  • Analyze performance of candidate large scale quantum computer architectures.

  • Coordinate with sub-system teams for technology insertions into the architecture.

Job description

We are seeking an AMO Theory Architect in our Broomfield, CO location to apply their skills to the development of our next generation large scale quantum computers. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the QCCD architecture, quantum error correction, basic sub-system concepts and requirements, experimental limitations, and theoretical use-cases. The candidate should also have a solid understanding of key QC scalability enablers such as photonics, micro-fabrication processes, ASICs, and ultra-high vacuum systems. This diverse set of topics will be used to create a state-of-the-art design for a commercial quantum computer that advances key performance metrics in qubit count, run‑time, and circuit fidelity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the hardware architecture team to conceptualize large scale quantum computers
  • Analyze the performance of a variety of candidate large scale quantum computers.
  • Define system level requirements and high-level sub-system and technology requirements.
  • Numerically simulated quantum operations such gates, measurements, readout, and cooling.
  • Work with sub-system teams to identify potential technology insertions into the architecture.
  • Communicate findings and design proposals to larger technical, management, and executive teams.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee best scientific practices across the architecture team.
YOU MUST HAVE
  • PhD completed prior to starting
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience (PhD inclusive) involving one or more of the following areas: quantum information, ion trapping, qubits, atomic physics, numerical simulation, spectroscopy, optics, vacuum systems, electronics, cryogenics, lasers, photonics, or laboratory work in the physical sciences.
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People’s Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE
  • Experience leading a team in designing or operating a device for quantum information processing.
  • 8+ years’ experience in scientific research and development, engineering, or leadership roles.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, and experience in working with customers and partners.
  • Experience modeling quantum systems
  • Experience developing quantum error correcting codes or quantum computing algorithms
  • Experience with laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms.
  • Experience performing simulation and modeling to inform experiments.
  • Experience with control systems for data collection, signal processing and analysis.
  • Experience designing and optimizing experiments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with published results within their field of research.
Compensation & Benefits

The pay range for this role is $130,000–$170,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate’s skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
