Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Neuro) to join the Neurosciences APPs – TRMC team in Elizabeth, NJ. You will provide expert inpatient and outpatient stroke care across the continuum, from acute stroke management to follow‑up clinics, guided by evidence‑based AHA/ASA standards.

The role requires NJ APN licensure, national certification, BLS/ACLS, and 2+ years in neurology or related fields, with NIHSS certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted APN license in New Jersey.
  • Current national certification (ANCC/AANP/NCCPA).
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Master’s degree required; Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years APN experience; neurology/related fields preferred.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong clinical knowledge base in stroke management and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Inpatient: Conduct comprehensive history and physical examinations for admitted stroke and TIA patients.
  • Inpatient: Formulate diagnoses, order tests, and develop treatment plans with supervising neurologist.
  • Inpatient: Manage acute stroke protocols, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
  • Inpatient: Serve on Code Stroke team and ensure standards are met.
  • Inpatient: Monitor progress, adjust plans, and coordinate discharge planning.
  • Inpatient: Educate and mentor nursing staff on stroke care.
  • Outpatient: Manage outpatient stroke and TIA follow-up clinics.
  • Outpatient: Provide secondary stroke prevention education and risk management.
  • Outpatient: Assess long-term recovery and post-stroke complications.
  • Outpatient: Coordinate referrals and medication reconciliation.
  • Programmatic: Participate in Stroke Program quality improvement and data reporting.
  • Programmatic: Contribute to protocols, order sets, and patient education.

Pay Range: $125,000 – $195,000 per year

Department: Neurosciences APPs – TRMC

Summary of Job Function
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Neurology team.
  • Provide expert clinical management and coordination of care for general neurology, stroke, and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients across the continuum of care, including inpatient acute care and outpatient clinic follow‑up.
Key Responsibilities
Inpatient Clinical Management
  • Conduct comprehensive history and physical examinations for admitted stroke and TIA patients within the emergency department and inpatient units.
  • Formulate diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop comprehensive treatment plans in collaboration with supervising or collaborating neurologist.
  • Manage acute stroke protocols, including evaluation for intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Serve as an active member of the Code Stroke response team, ensuring necessary orders are placed and standard of care is met.
  • Monitor patient progress, adjust treatment plans as necessary, and facilitate timely and appropriate discharge planning in collaboration with the care coordination team.
  • Provide real‑time education and clinical mentorship to nursing staff and other team members regarding acute stroke management and standards of care.
Outpatient Clinical Management
  • Manage dedicated outpatient stroke and TIA follow‑up clinics.
  • Provide comprehensive secondary stroke prevention education, counseling, and management of risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and smoking cessation.
  • Assess long‑term recovery, address post‑stroke complications such as spasticity, depression, and fatigue, and coordinate ongoing rehabilitation needs.
  • Ensure smooth transitions by reconciling medications and making appropriate referrals to community resources or specialists.
Programmatic Support & Quality Improvement
  • Participate actively in Stroke Program quality improvement initiatives, data collection, and performance metric reporting to maintain and advance Joint Commission comprehensive stroke center certification standards.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of clinical protocols, order sets, and patient education materials.
  • Engage in stroke research initiatives and professional development activities to remain current with advances in neuroscience.
Qualifications

  • Current national certification from an accredited body (e.g., ANCC, AANP, NCCPA).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
