Job summary

The Adult Program and Outreach Coordinator at BCCLS coordinates and promotes programs for adults, working at the public service desks while planning community activities. The role focuses on building partnerships, expanding library awareness, and delivering friendly service.

Under supervision of the Head of Adult and Patron Services, the coordinator will develop outreach materials, engage local organizations, and help shape library services to meet community needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred; MLS/MLIS not required.
  • Experience working with the public in libraries, education, nonprofits, or service environments.
  • Experience planning programs, events, or community activities.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with others.
  • Comfort with computers and common office/digital technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Promote library services, programs, resources, and policies to the public.

  • Assist with program logistics, including scheduling, room setup, registration, promotion, and follow-up.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with local organizations and community partners.
  • Represent the library at events, meetings, and outreach activities.
  • Gather community feedback to inform adult services and programming.

Job description

The Adult Program and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for providing excellent public service, developing and coordinating programs and services for adults, and promoting the library within the community. Under the supervision of the Head of Adult and Patron Services, this position works directly with the public at the service desk while also taking an active role in planning programs, building community connections, and expanding awareness of library resources and services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Public Servic:
  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive service to library patrons at the public service desks, primarily at the Adult Services desk.
  • Assist patrons with general technology use and general inquiries.
  • Help patrons locate materials and navigate library services and collections.
  • Promote library services, programs, resources, and policies to the public.
  • Participate in opening, closing, and other routine library operations.
Adult Programs and Services:
  • Plan, coordinate, promote, and evaluate programs and activities for adults.
  • Develop programs that reflect the interests and needs of the community.
  • Coordinate with presenters, performers, community organizations, and other program partners.
  • Assist with program logistics, including scheduling, room setup, registration, promotion, and follow-up.
  • Maintain program calendars and related records.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce new services, programs, and resources for adult patrons.
  • Collaborate with other library staff on library-wide programs and initiatives.
Outreach and Community Engagement:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local organizations, businesses, community groups, schools, senior organizations, and other community partners.
  • Represent the library at community events, meetings, fairs, and outreach activities.
  • Promote library programs, services, and resources outside of the library.
  • Assist with developing outreach materials, displays, social media content, newsletters, and other promotional efforts.
  • Gather community feedback and use it to help inform adult services and programming.
General Responsibilities:
  • Work cooperatively with library staff and contribute to a positive, welcoming environment.
  • Attend staff training and professional development activities as assigned.
  • Follow library policies and procedures and maintain confidentiality of patron information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; job duties may change as the needs of the library evolve.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience preferred. Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred, but not required.
  • Experience working with the public in a library, educational, nonprofit, community, or service-oriented environment preferred.
  • Experience planning programs, events, or community activities preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with others.
  • Comfortable working with computers, online resources, and common office and digital technologies.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with community organizations and diverse populations.
  • Creativity, initiative, flexibility, and enthusiasm for serving the community.
Requirements:

Must be able to work in a public library environment, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and lifting up to 25 lbs.

Library experience within the BCCLS consortium is preferred but not required.

A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.

Schedule:

The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, Saturday coverage on a rotating basis, and the potential for Sunday coverage on a volunteer basis.

The ideal candidate must be flexible with their hours, as the work schedule is subject to change according to the needs of the library.
