UM Health-Sparrow Lansing is a flagship hospital with a broad perioperative portfolio and a commitment to academic health system excellence. This leadership role oversees 22 operating rooms and strategic growth across the surgical services enterprise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees required, one of which must be in Nursing.
• Current RN License.
• Minimum of 8 years of clinical experience, including at least 5 years in leadership within a large healthcare system.
• Experience developing and implementing clinical service plans for surgical patients.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee operations across multiple perioperative services within Sparrow Lansing Hospital.
• Report to the Chief Medical Officer and partner with surgeons, anesthesia leaders, nursing leadership, and executives.
• Advance quality, operational performance, patient experience, and surgical growth initiatives.
• Collaborate on growth strategies as UM Health-Sparrow expands ambulatory surgery capacity.

Kirby Bates Associates has been exclusively retained by the University of Michigan Regional Health Network to conduct the search for the next Administrative Director, Surgical Services, at their flagship Sparrow Lansing Hospital.

UM Health-Sparrow Lansing, the flagship hospital of mid-Michigan and a member of University of Michigan Health, is a 733-bed teaching hospital serving a diverse and growing community. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of services, including the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, advanced specialty care, and access to the research, innovation, and expertise of the University of Michigan Health system.

Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer, the Director, Surgical Services will lead a growing perioperative enterprise at a critical and exciting time for the organization. This highly visible leader will oversee operations across 22 operating rooms while partnering closely with surgeons, anesthesia leaders, nursing leadership, and executive stakeholders to advance quality, operational performance, patient experience, and continued surgical growth.

As University of Michigan Health continues to invest in surgical services throughout the region, including the expansion of ambulatory surgery capabilities, this role offers the opportunity to shape the future of perioperative care while building strong physician partnerships and driving strategic growth initiatives.

Opportunity Highlights:

• Report directly to the Chief Medical Officer in a highly visible leadership role, serving as the senior nursing leader for Surgical Services and partnering closely with physicians, anesthesia leaders, nursing colleagues, and executive leadership to advance strategic priorities across the perioperative enterprise.
• Lead a sophisticated perioperative platform that includes 22 operating rooms, ambulatory surgery, endoscopy, PACU, outpatient surgery, and sterile processing services.
• Shape the next chapter of surgical services growth as UM Health-Sparrow expands ambulatory surgery capacity and invests in the future of perioperative care across the region.
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia leaders, nursing colleagues, and executive leadership to shape the future of surgical services through growth initiatives, quality improvement, workforce engagement, and operational performance excellence.
• Build your career within a nationally recognized academic health system while maintaining meaningful local autonomy and leadership impact.
• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees required, one of which must be in Nursing.
• Current RN License.
• Minimum of 8 years of clinical experience, including a minimum of 5 years leadership experience in a large healthcare system with multiple locations and specialties.
• Active involvement in the development and implementation of clinical service plans related to surgical patients including: Surgery, Post-Anesthesia Unit, Outpatient Surgery and/or surgical short stay units.
